Crypto Swap Exchange
I've heard of few in the past but never tried any one of them honestly. Here are some that I know of:
https://www.surespot.me/ It's opensource / free / you could transfer your conversation to another device / multiple identities using 1 device only and some more futures...
https://gli.ph/ It's more like a buy and sell community that also have messaging functionality
https://whispersystems.org/ It's free and secured
I know another one but since it's still on it's initial stage of developement, I won't spoil it for now.

Just writing some code
I mean email, chat, etc. -- I know about nxtty but am having trouble finding out whether there's anything else out there or if someone's working on a Blockchain-based communications app.
What do you mean by a blockchain based communications app? You mean by encoding the messsages into the blockchain, because that is really the only way the blockchain could be utilized for that. If so, then probably not, and I hope to god that such an app is never created. We don't need spam like that to bloat the blockchain with useless crap and people running full nodes won't want to store it.
