That's the problem this is really not a 'commodity' or even a 'currency'..... its a collectible that people are trying to use as a commodity and currency.
Just like any other collectible it has value and its value is based on what someone will pay for it.
I would say it is a commodity, a currency and a collectible. with bitcoin you can do anything you can do with money and more. Collect it, speculate with it, use it for purchases, whatever. Just like any other collectible it has value and its value is based on what someone will pay for it.

What do you mean with your words "internet-based commodities"? Do you mean the bitcoin. I would say that the bitcoin is proven valuable. One bitcoin is worth around $100, that's like a lot of money.
Seeing some of the problems of bitcoins with court systems and corporate policies, one could claim that new internet-based commodities are outlawed until proven valuable/defensible.
I don't think its a new trend, illegal goods have always been valuable. This just makes it slightly easier!
