I think that in the near future they will continue to divide second place among themselves. This is not the first year
Ethereum is by far the superior crypto compared to ripple. Ripple isn't even decentralized, they have a revoke function just like EOS. Eth has nearly 10x the daily trading volume of Ripple as well. This doesn't mean that xrp wont pump in the future though, many shitcoins pump hard during bulruns.

I think if ETH keeps trying to increase the marketcap, it could be possible for ETH to take the 2nd position and replace XRP again. It's a big and long battle between the two, and I'm hoping that Ethereum will eventually win the war before we end 2019, they have held that position for so long and they know how to keep it up from competitors like Ripple, and other altcoins we have to see now how they are going to do that.

Because the core developers have created a lot of roadmap and the next hardfork will not give you any token and that will decrease the block reward of ethereum. that makes sense to see ether will be back to the second position as soon as possible.
Both are strong coins with huge supporters ready to invest more on, after the fork, we will see a new scenario either Eth will get their position back or XRP will retain, it's still for grabs.

Yes, I hope you are right. 
ETH is performing very well and it looks like it will get back second place on coinmarketcap soon. XRP has no substancial base and will decrease longterm because it offers no real crypto. I have done a poll about it here, ETH is leading:

Your opinion is correct Ethereum is fast catching up on XRP and maybe after the fork we are going to see a new scenario, this is something very interesting and at the same thing exciting I don't like what happens to Litecoin after falling out of the second spot it is now in the 8th position I hope it will not happen to Eth.

Yeah they are both $14B in market cap.So ETH is really catching up right now and anytime right now ETH would be back in action due to the fork.
