everything in bitcoin and anything similar to bitcoin being decentralized works based on consensus. if you can convince enough people to use a new name for bitcoin then the name is changed to blahblahcoin!

it is something similar to saying bits or mBTC, uBTC or satoshi or even the ISO name XBT
you can see nobody really uses XBT so it is useless apart from seeing it in some exchanges and some other random places.

I  agree that in order for Bitcoin to change name, the majority should agree with it.  Bitcoin is not owned by anyone but by everyone, this means that we need to persuade the community, merchants and developer to implement a change the name of Bitcoin.  As the qouted said, it was labeled XBT but the most common use is BTC.

I don´t see what's the point of changing Bitcoin's name...
I do think that the name is already popular enough, so there would be no wins in changing its name

I am curious about the idea that is it possible to change the name of bitcoin or suppose the name of any altcoin if the developers or the owner of bitcoin or the altcoin want to change it? what will the developer do if they will want?

There would need to be an huge agreement of everyone involved in bitcoin which is not happening since we can't even get our act together and agree to activate segwit.

Bitcoin is a cool name and it will remain like that for life.

You get the official names for things and then you get the unofficial names for things that are commonly used by the community. Unofficially you

can call Bitcoins anything you like, and if it catch on, your name will be used unofficially. The official Bitcoin name was chosen by Satoshi and it was

included in the code and the white paper. I would also want to change it's name, because I think it is confusing, but many people seem to differ

from my view, so consensus will never be reached to change the name.  Roll Eyes

I am not really sure as to why would you ask this, of course it cannot be changed, it would create caous and confusion all around if it would. I don't think anyone even wants this to happen, Bitcoin is the perfect name and no need to mess up the name, or else people might really be confused and consider it to be alt coin. Plus whats wrong with the name? It's simple, easy to remember and use. That's a advantage to it, cause it's not under any one control so no one can change the name.

i dont think its possible but my experience says that everything which is being programmed can be controlled by someone so if satoshi wants then might be there is a chance that he/she can change its name or any altcoin name by any altcoin developer anyway i like the bitcoin name pretty much

I don't think changing the name of bitcoin will be possible, as its now an established brand and changing the name will be expensive to get it back up and the change will make it become an altcoin.

I think bitcoins name can be change, but i think even if they can change its name, what is the purpose? what is the reason? What will be the new name? who will decide to make the new name?
As we all know bitcoin is been here a long time ago, but noone ever thought of changing it, and I think even if they change the name noone will change beside its name itself obviously.

Coincidence seeing another toppic "GoogleCoin and FacebookCoin" right below this thread? Be carefull this could be big corporations on attack speed approaching  Shocked

However the labelling, the brand name on a wallet software could do that, using Bitcoin below the hood but dubbing it CorpCoin or whatever.

Bitcoin already changed its name before. They called it litecoin. Probably best just to leave things as they are for now, The reason bitcoin is at the price its at right now is because people have trust in it. If you wanted a name change then theres countless alts to choose from.

Do you have any suggestions about a new name of bitcoin?
Perhaps you could promote this idea and gather some supporters, but it will be totally pointless.
By the way,i really want the new name of btc to be bitchcoin,no offense,i just like how it sounds. Grin
Just kidding.

it can not happen, no one wants to change its name when it was known to everyone. it was very successful, so the manager will maintain it, and help it grow stronger. Your idea is an absurdity. Similar anything goes wrong. All of us look forward to Bitcoins exist and grow with it's name, is not another name

the network is the network.
the code is the code

but if you wanted to change your own node to display a different name.. you can
some call it "btc" some call it digital gold. some call it revolutionary money.

you are free to call it whatever you like.
however this name you choose does not impact the code or network.

more popular, people are changing how the units of measure of the currency are displayed.
some use mbtc, some use 'bits' some use 'satoshi'

again this is just personal choice that does not affect the network or code.

call it whatever you like. but try and get everyone to agree to it.. thats a whole different story

same with dollars
some call it dollars.. some call it "greenbacks" some call it by many names. but its all the same thing.
no one can agree on all the pet names individuals give it but they atleast accept dollars have more then one name and they know whatever its individually called.. it doesnt change what the actual currency is.

so if you want to talk to people about satoshi's or bits. you can.
if you want to talk about the currency as BTC and the protocol as Bitcoin. you can.

Bitcoin isn't controlled by anyone, so if they wanted to change the name then they will have to release a new currency, for example Bitcoin 2.0. However, in order to become popular and trusted by other members (because there are many, many fakes and scams around) they will need to reveal themselves and prove they were the real devs of Bitcoin.

regardless of whatever practical proofness bitcoin has over being changed, a thing as big as bitcoin already has made its name known and simply changing its name or whatever won't change the fact that people will still use the label Bitcoin. People and companies who use the term in discussions and branding would most likely just overlook any changes to the name, I think that's a likely given.

No single entity in the Bitcoin world can force anything upon Bitcoin. Period. Changes in Bitcoin are always done per agreement of the majority. There are people whos opinion is valued, so what they say will gain a lot of followers. Whether it is a name change or any thing else it goes like this. Someone make a suggestion and then two thing need to be done. You need to make this idea known to people and check if it is technical possible. The order in which you do it is not to important and you do both at the same time very often. If the idea is seen as a good one, then users, merchants and other will show their support. If the developers agree, then they will test and implement it. And if the miners and nodes etc agree they will run it. If the majority will go with it, then you idea is realized.

Of course it is but you'd need the miners to play ball or you'd end up on the short chain.

The cool thing about Bitcoin is that the developers don't control it, the network can do whatever they want and if the majority of the network adopts a change then that is the new truth! I know a lot of people have considered it to get away from the drama in Bitcoin's early days but I would be pretty sad if the name was ever changed, it's lasted so long already!
