not enterely true, there was a ponzi called cointellect that was basically giving away free money, and you need only one gpu(bought for gamining) to start earning a tons with them
so it's possible without assets, but unlikely...
The problem though is in almost all cases you will pay more in electricity then a GPU makes.
I parted out most of my GPU rigs and sold them. I got more off parts then they ever would have mined at that point. Were talking over a year ago, before first block erupters. GPU is a dying form of mining.
not in that ponzi, i was making 0.6-0.8 a day or even more at the end , using renting services
was like free money really
