I've seen good deals on R9 280x, but they are saying that mixing 280x with RX 480 is not going to work, because of driver differences (https://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/11546/can-i-add-an-rx480-to-a-system-that-has-r9-280x-already). I wonder if that is true. And if it is, what are the RX 480 compatible cards?

16.10.1 WHQL driver works well on both of those.
I don't think it works with the RX 5xx series though as they came out after that driver version did.

You'll see lower stability than if you stick with "one generation":

For reference on the AMD side - HD 78xx/79xx and all R5/R7/R9 cards except the Fury line count as "one generation".
All Fury cards are the "one generation".
RX 4xx and 5xx count as "one generation".
The VEGA cards will probably count as "one generation" but only with themselves, they MIGHT count as part of the Fury generation but I doubt it.

Nvidia side, the only significant variation from the "First digit designates the generation (10xx counting 10 as a digit)" is that the GTX 750 ti is part of the 9xx (Maxwell) generation.
NVidia though doesn't seem to be quite as picky about being stable between 2 "close" generations as AMD is though, probably because they have the time and money to do a better job overall on their drivers and seem to TEST them on further-back card generations than AMD appears to do.

Sure, I have a rig with 8 cards, 7x 1050ti and 1x 1060.

Some of my rigs have 3x1070's and 3x580's due to availability when ordered.

Everything should work fine, you just got to keep an eye on messing up with the drivers.

Safe mode, DDU everything, AMD then Nvidia.

I just bought 3x Gigabyte Nvidia 1060 to supplement my rig that already has 3x Sapphire nitro+4g 580's. I hope I get it to work. Im going to try to run two configs of claymore at the same time, one for the AMDs and one for nvidia. If I see it fit I'll mine Eth on the AMDs and Zcash on the Nvidia cards.

How its working your setup? can you run with no issues, different GPUs with different coins?

There is an issue with incompatible drivers in Linux. The Windows Crimson Relive drivers support all GCN and up cards. If you mine with GCN 1 and 2 cards (Tahiti, Pitcarin, etc) and want to mix them with GCN 3 or newer cards, Windows is really your only option. The AMDGPU Pro drivers in Linux only support GCN 3 or newer cards. There is supposedly a workaround to get the older GCN 1 & 2 cards to work together with newer cards in Linux using the open source drivers, but I couldn't get it to work.

Thank you, I'm relieved knowing I can watch for good deals to upgrade my PC. I'll have to double check for good PSU too.

yes it is especially with the same manufacter, with different one like amd and nvidia is also possible, you just need to configure correctly the drivers to avoid stability issue, some instability are possible anyway

I have a 1080 and 970 on the same machine. Can control each device separately. Use device 0 in 1 config, and device 1 in the other for 2 cards. Not sure if its a PITA to setup with AMD and Nvidia in the same rig.

My MOBO supports up to 3 GPUs. What I don't know is if one can put different GPUs to use for mining. Now I have RX480, but is it possible to add R9 290x or GTX 970 to the same and use for mining with such miner as Nicehash? PC is running Win10.
