Is it worth it to buy a VPN plan for 14.99 a month? Problem is that when this site gets a DDOS attack again, Its from people using VPNs.

I use https://www.privatetunnel.com/ for that exact reason, it's prepaid
Thank you bitpop, I just signed up, It will be great if they offered Bitcoin as a

payment method Cheesy

I'm sure they will. Aww I had a referral link.

The service is from the inventors of open vpn.
Lol, I saw that, You tricked me into a good site, Thanks. Smiley

It's about as safe as any other Internet connection. The idea is that you don't trust any connection including your home/office one.

no, you're still safe if you're using https. if the AP owner tries to MITM, your browser will show a certificate warning.
Even better with certificate patrol, which I adopted after the dns poisoning attack.

They have a guest login but anyone can get on the internet near the hotel, so is it safe to use the internet here to do bitcoin transactions and loggin to websites?  Thanks.

You are safe from man in the middle attacks as long as its https UNLESS the hotel wifi admin is sniffing, he will be able to intercept pretty much anything you do

No it is not. You never now who is on the same network as you / or what is being logged.
VPN is a valid protection, as your traffic is encrypted from the start (so the hotel can't log anything, except your connection to the vpn endpoint)

Not sure what to do about the mobile devices that start checking email and everything the instant they connect to a wifi hotspot... you connect to VPN manually afterward.
You get a Blackberry. Everything goes encrypted from the device back to Blackberry servers for messaging, IP exits from data centers in the Midwest or Canada.

My app freezes all traffic unless connected

No always use a vpn

vpn only problem is that it gives problems with some websites (some online newspapers, forums, twitter, etc.).
But sure in a public place always use vpn no matter what, unless you have nothing sensitive to protect.

True but I use prepaid vpn from the inventors of openvpn and its rock solid
