Hi

is it save to upgrade from Ubuntu 11.04 Natty to Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS without losing all mining configurations?
(or what configurations are to save or to make new?)
TIA

Ubuntu upgrades for me have been about 50/50: Half the time the upgrade is successful, half the time it fails catastrophically.

The Ubuntu upgrade application doesn't back anything up, so if it fails at any point your system is essentially ruined.

Back up back up back up.

Even if the upgrade succeeds I've found that I end up with some kind of broken frankenstein OS that is half the old version, half the new version.

Instead of upgrading I recommend you back up your data, wipe and install the new version, then restore your data.

Works fine for me, I use the server edition for mining.

It should be fine in most cases unless you have something really exotic installed... ...which you probably shouldn't on a mining rig! Smiley

I actually re-installed my 11.04 first and configured everything. Then I did a fresh install of 12.04 on a separate partition in a multi-boot config. Then only after 12.04 was fully up and running I made it the default boot option and it is happily chugging along. In case I come across any problem with 12.04 I can simply switch back to my 11.04 partition which works just fine...
is it possible in a multi-boot config to share the same /home/user directory?
(e.g. /home/user on a separate partition)
TIA

In my case, upgrading to 11.10 (which you have to do before you can go to 12.04) totally screwed the system. It did not detect the card properly and gave me a blank screen on startup. I did a fresh install of 12.04 and now everything is working fine. I actually re-installed my 11.04 first and configured everything. If you do want to (or have to) go the fresh install way, follow this nice step-by-step guide which will make it a breeze to set up your new system as you can just copy and paste in your terminal one command after another, relax as the system configures itself. The guide is for xubuntu, but works fine with ubuntu 12.04  ---   https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/complete-guide-to-mine-bitcoin-on-xubuntu-1204-82685

(BTW, all of the above are 64-bit versions)

Not for hire.
If you have a spare hard drive, you can use the dd command to duplicated your install exactly as it is now onto another hard drive.  I do this all the time to save settings.  Just make sure the spare is in fact fully working and you will have no worries with that upgrade.
