Yes you can short term profit form coins. Ethereum is best for it. You can also try with Waves, Stratis, Next, Decent. It good coin and trading volume also good. You can try short term profits from this coins.

It's acutally a great time to buy altcoins. The fork has been canceled, which means that money will easily be flowing towards altcoins (from BTC). BTC had already a great run and made a return of over 600% this years, I think a retrace is expected and money will flow then to alt coins. Ethereum is a good pick if you're looking for something safe, but depending on your risk tolerance you might go for something which is less known, maybe a smaller cap coin or a new ICO which looks promising. Either way you can't really go wrong by holding some of the top ten cryptocurrencies, they have consistently performed well in the last years and it's likely they will continue to do so in the future. Alts are on the rise after the cancelation and we will all finally get a break from horizontal movements.

We do know the recent update regarding on fork status which it ends up that it being cancelled already which means no fork would happen on this november 2nd week. Price would really react on this one and we should really prepare for corrections after such update. For those people who did bought bitcoin on peak prices would really have the worry specially if the people would decide to take profits and switch back to altcoins again. That is very possible if Bitcoin keeps going up, although most of them will get pumped a little and then start experiencing the same level of dump again with bitcoin soaring. It is a norm and it is better to get as much quick profit one can get from them without being too greedy in case such scenario occurs or just stick to the charts for any strange movement. 
It is always a good time to buy,, I don't think any particular time stands out. What really matters is doing your research and buying the right altcoin at the right price, buying without researching is akin to gambling. It may or may not go well.

If you are buying a really crappy shitcoin that has absolutely no intrinsic value and the code is just copied from elsewhere even if it looks dirt cheap right now it's probably not a great idea to buy into it, since it has no potential whatsoever.

What can I see now there are some alts that are bleeding so considering that your friend wants to buy some alts, yes he can buy some alts now and hold it for 1-2 months. Take time to analyze the market, buy those coins that has real projects.

buy alts and hold - but keep an eye on them for the next week, as I expect they will continue to drop as BTC goes up
Bitcoin is on a bull run at the moment and alts are available at cheap price i would suggest do some research and grab some fundamentally good coins and hold . alts are supposed to rise after the segwit2x event.
