AFAIK Mt. Gox was coded by Jed and a lot of non-Japanese bank accounts are holding their fund. Mark was actually running CallyHost and he suddenly jumped onto the bandwagon. As a CEO he is definitely responsible for the failure now. But was the whole thing within his grip ?

yes, yes he is. Read the Wired article – http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2014/03/bitcoin-exchange/

"Ver and Powell were set to work through the weekend, but when they arrived at the company’s tiny office that Saturday, there was a surprise. Mark Karpeles had decided to take the weekend off. The two volunteers were flabbergasted. “I thought that was completely insane and demoralizing for the rest of the team,” Powell remembers. On Monday, Powell says, Karpeles did return to work, but he spent part of the day stuffing envelopes. “I was like: ‘Dude why are you doing this? You can do this anytime. The site is offline. You need to get the site online.’”"

Excellent article here about Mark/Gox:  http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2014/03/bitcoin-exchange/

Despite any external factors like US Gov involvement, etc., it does seem that his ego is much bigger than his supposed "high IQ".  And as a CEO he was/is completely incompetent.

Obviously, "A legend in his own mind!".

I don't think the people who lost money are going to be doing a deep analysis of responsibility.

I don't think Mark stole the coins. But he had been pulling the wool over our eyes for a criminally long time. He knew people's deposits where just sinking into a black hole. He is personally responsible for mtgox's collapse that's for damn sure. Where the coins went we will probably never know.

Also, 100% sure Mark has a very nice stash of Bitcoin and fiat.

If it's not his fault, or Jed's, then it's the person he hired to be responsible of such matters' fault.... And said person stole the coins. My 2cents.

Programmatically it is probably Jed's fault. And the monetary blockage is due to international pressure. Mark is probably not personally responsible.
