Is mining for a day at Full speed the same as mining for 2 days at half speed?

While this could be possible if you're pushing you PSU or cooling to the limits it should not happen that way. clock speeds more or less control wattage usage in a linear fashion - double clock speeds and double your wattage. Voltage needs to be squared when control wattage usage. So 50% voltage is 0.5x0.5 = 0.25 or 25% of the wattage.

So if you take a card that normally runs 1.0v and clock it down to 0.8v but keep the same clocks, you should be lowering the power for the core by 0.8x0.8=64% of previous core usage. Of course other card components will still use the same power like the memory and the fan (assuming same RPM).

From 7 in the morning till 10 in the evening though is expensive.
So I was kind of looking into that option but not sure yet.

Yeah you can go ahead and turn on/off the machine during the best mining times. If you stick to a large pool like WemineLTC and mine Litecoin you should have minimal variability - the only difference would be trying to mine during lower difficulty swings. Bust out the calculator after every difficulty change to make sure mining is cheaper than outright buying coins.

A lot of people are saying is better to just buy coins.
I can understand that given the constant difficulty changes.

To be honest though I kind of enjoy mining

There will be different situations and answers of this question.
First of all it depends where you are using your miner? of course its same if difficulty stays same untill 2 days if not you will regret on your next half speed if dificulty rises every hrs or withinn that time.
Depends on electricty and system, if you are running only device for mining then no prob but if you are running device in a rig and with all other stuffs then electrict cost of other stuffs will be added in half speed but if you mine with full speed your electricty cost for other stuff will be same but income will rise so you will pay less.

With BTC, difficulty is continually increasing by a large amount every couple of weeks, so you'd be much better off doing all the mining sooner rather than later.

Alts however - particularly the lesser known ones - go up and down in difficulty a lot so the opposite could be the case.

It's the same in the long run if you compared for example 500 days at full vs 1000 half-days, regardless of pool payment method. There is on caveat: You have to do this at the same difficulty.

So for every day at diff X, you need 2 half-days at diff X. If your two half-days happen to have a difficulty adjustment between them, you will make less.
