How long will it take to recover my capital for building a $5000 rig?

Hard to say. Let's say you get the best Cryptonight GPUs, like 5x AMD Vega 56/64 and you learn how to tweak them for best hash and lowest power (so, about 2000-2200MH each card).

Even then, it will depend on the markets, BTC/ETH/LTC price, Monero/Electroneum price, maybe a new high profit coin shows up, maybe it all tanks.

Then it depends on the cost of the parts in your area and the cost of electricity.

Maybe 3 moths. Maybe 12 months. It's hard to say.

Yes its profitable, not the most at the moment but it depends if you want a solid top 10 coin with a good future or if you want to mine the most profitable Cryptonight coin like ETN and sell it straight away.

it's better if you mine something else as a cryptonight, like intensecoin, which should be more profitable than a well known established coin like monero

Mine when difficulty is low even if it's not the #1 most profitable right now then hold and wait for 2-100x price increase.

2 - 100X ??!!?? Have you ever experienced x100 Smiley? I guess some "shitcoin" with pump and dump, right?
LTC $3.5 to $350 in half a year.

Ethereum was worth just 8 dollars a year ago, 800 now.
As for the initial question, yes, monero is profitable. Even old hardware can mine it just fine and power consumption is lower compared to mining other coins.

For now ETN more profitable, but i think if you hold mined coins, monero will more increases in price

I've found it to be profitable currently.

I'm getting ~2.2+ KH/S from:

Older Dell T7500 dual XEON + 2 RX 580s doing both CPU and GPU.

Using 480 Watts at the wall at just under 7 cents per KWH

I have a low initial investment though cause I only had to buy one GPU ($260)
