yeah go big or go small.   for small run a used s-1 down clocked and under volted.  odds are it will never hit but a s-1 can be found for 50 -75 dollars  under volt it and use 170 watts for 130 hash.

I just had a look at the completed listings of sold antiminer S1 on ebay.   Quite a few of them still selling at around the $150 level when you factor in shipping costs.  Shows how the uninformed can easily drive up prices at auctions.  I paid $300 (including shipping costs and taxes at customs) for an S1 at the beginning of July.  According to the retro mining calculator I made back about half of that, $150.   Probably the norm for any used miners you get at free market prices.

I run a solo pool and I'd say no.

It is not a bad idea when you are very large or very small.

Very large because you'll be big enough to guarantee a few blocks within each diff period before the diff rise - after a diff rise if you don't get a block there is no way to regain that period again.

Very small because the amount you'll ever earn will amount to nothing but if you strike it rich it's a big windfall.

The real question is what is very large and what is very small?

Since luck alone can't guarantee you find blocks no matter how big you are and it can take up to 8x diff every so often to find a block, probably large enough to average 10 blocks a diff period which is 0.5% of the network. Which means you need 1PH at current diffs.

and you can have an endless chance at an entire block.

Curious to inquire about solo mining....

Right now all the mining done is by pool in my camp.

I am wondering if we took 20TH and dedicated it to solomining if we would be able to solve a block or not.

Also wondering how long that might take etc based on the numbers.

Not worth taking risk solo mining. I did rather use a pool and recover asap and buy more hashing more..

p2pool is better than solo mining. You get frequent payouts, you're in full control of the mining. There's nothing better.

Can you solve a block solo mining - yes.
Can you potentially win the lottery - yes.

Will you solve a block - maybe
Will you win the lottery - maybe

The odds are very slim of solving it during this difficulty and will down down even further in 3 days.  I wouldn't suggest trying to solo-mine unless you could average at least a block every 2-3 days which would mean owning 0.2% of the network.
