For Linux simply use an USB 3.0 stick

Under linux there is almost no differance. So SSD is actually waste of money.

Under Windows thats different story.

EaseUS Partition Master works well and it's free. There's also Paragon Migrate OS to SSD but it's not free.

There are many programs which allow you to create an image of your hard drive. Then when you replace hardware, you install the exact copy of your disk in a few minutes. I have not enjoyed this way. The last program I used that Partition.Magic.

Thank you, all.

I want to reuse parts from the desktop that I already have and sitting idle on my table. So far I have planned to reuse 4GB DDR3 and hard disk.

One thing that could be of benefit is to advise on some mirroring/replica/backup so that the migration to SSD would be like a flash. Any views?

Rizwan

If all you have is a 500 GB HDD, that will work fine. Actually any HDD will work fine for mining,it just needs to be large enough to hold the OS, some virtual memory (about 16 GB) and the mining software. So for Windows even a 32 GB would work, although I would recommend getting something slightly larger such as a 80 GB as it would be tight. For a Linux build you can even go smaller and even use a flash drive as has been mentioned.

If you get to the point that you are building new rigs from scratch (ordering the parts) I would recommend going with a SSD. They are becoming fairly reasonable in price and you can often pick up a 120 GB for under $50 if you catch them on sale. If your motherboard supports it you can also go with M2 drive. The last couple of rigs I built I found some Intel 120 GB M2 drives for around $69, which while a bit more expensive than I normally like to put in a mining rig, they do eliminate the need for using a SATA power cable at all and since they mount on a motherboard I don't need to worry about the drive.

Hi,

I have a 500 GB non-SSD hard disk. Is SSD a necessity for mining? What could be the cons if I use non-SSD hard disk?

Thanking you in anticipation.

Looking forward.

Rizwan

120GB SSD is sufficient to run Windows 7/Windows 10/Unix with all your mining rig, provide advantage over speed of rebooting your entire operating system. Conventional HDD is fine as well. Real pain is if you're in need of rapid troubleshooting of your system.

If you are just starting like me I guess you don't need expensive SSD yet as I using ordinary 500 GB with my 3 rx570 and its still working well though I'm also planning to buy ssd as per checking it from those pro miners there some advantage like speed boot up and less hassle with drivers installations.

It's not a must at all. Even if you run several wallets 0-24 for staking or whatever a HDD is fine.

I use SSDs though as I like the speed, they can take a beating (highly shock resistant), no HDD noise and they're much smaller and barely more expensive.
