There was another project already started last year
but went onto hold, i think due to inability to collect enough funds in the preico phase.

I could be that they will continue the project in near future but there is no any specific news.

Interesting thought. It looks like decentralization can really be a tread! It will make us less rely on one company.

If you want secure communication then take a look at crypviser which is going to release a product soon and get listed on hitbtc. At the moment it is only on bitshares dex, but price will go to the moon once it hits hitbtc!!

The primary purpose of decentralization is not security but avoidance of censorship. Email can already be made private through encryption.

That project sounds good, but are you willing to pay fees just to sent an email?
Why not use gmail instead its free and secured.

Spamming i think would be the disadvantage of this project if this happens.

Looks like a number of companies are working on it. This one, swisstok, is in the midst of an ICO, and their white paper mentions a number of their competitors:

I think this idea can be improved in several ways.

Is it possible for a decentralized "network" to have a list of all valid "e-mail" addresses, which is known to no one except the owner of each account and the network itself (not the miners)?

So it would be free to create accounts and to send e-mail. Since no one knows what the valid addresses are and there is practically an infinite number to be created, there is no incentive for spammers to randomly send e-mails. It would be like trying to brute-force bitcoin, would take hundreds of years before finding a valid address.

There would be duplicated nodes on the internet to host the e-mails, these "miners" would be paid fees by the receiver on behalf of holding their e-mail. Using a decryption key, one can download the e-mails to their computer to save storage cost, or leave it on the server as a backup. I imagine the cost would not be more than 1-2 USD per year, even to host everything on the servers. The reason the receiver pays for storage is because they are the ones that gave their e-mail to the senders, inviting themselves to receive e-mail from those persons, and in addition, if the sender were to pay for storage cost, and if the recipient did not check their e-mail for a year, that cost would be on the sender. Any split in the cost would also negatively impact the sender due to this fact.

The only drawback I see is that people could not publicly announce their e-mail addresses, because then they get hit by spammers. One way to solve this would be to impose a fee for spending, and have the network adjust the fee based on reputation. So new users pay high fees (and all spammers), but the fee dramatically reduces based on reputation.

Are there any decentralized networks using reputation that have worked well (not for e-mail, but for anything)?

Yes please!

Thought about this a few months back, here are some thoughts on that matter:

One of the main obstacles would be the management of "outsiders" and spam. You would need a fee per mail sent, since you need to pay "miners" for their work. You have to design a system that allows to reward them for processing mails that are sent into the system from outside adresses and thus are sent without paying a fee. You could create a whitelist (with the recipients paying for the delivery), but even this would need energy to check whether a mail is legitimate or not, which might create an attack vector.
There may be other solutions out there, maybe there should be some kind of flatrate instead of paying per mail.
Yes, many things to be consider when develpte this kind of coins!
