go to your profile and you can edit the setting for notification via email, you can also watch/unwatch the topics to get notified for them
You can sign up for email notifications in the profile page, if that is what you are referring to.
I do usually resolved, have set to send email notifications for new replies or Personal message. And in my gmail set to pop up notification.
No, there is no way that I have seen. But I have heard there's a bitcointalk extension that might do it.
The watchlist and show new replies links will take you to the watchlist and unread replies respectively. They update every time someone posts a thread in a thread that you have watched (watchlist, default is watch a thread when post) or a thread that you have previously posted in.
There is also the notify option which can be set to send you email notifications for new replies in topics. Check the settings under profile.

you can only get notified when someone posted a reply on a topic and that's it.

I just check my posts from time to time to see if there's been a reply.
