Are you sure they're talking about the same software? Keep in mind that some users make mistakes here and there such as saving their seed on cloud storage, so the software itself might not be at fault. Be careful when you read a review. If some anonymous user says A or B without any detailed explanation, it might be fake. I used vanitygen in the past and so far there's no problem. I still use the address sometimes and so far there's no security issue. 
The link provided from 99bitcoins is safe it is the original but next time ask it here directly instead of using Google on searching Vanitygen tool.

Vanitygen should be safe, I downloaded it from the links on here (most recently was a few days ago actually): https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Vanitygen ← I think this is one of the sites the forum owns.
But the version I downloaded was 0.20-win.

I've only used it offline and have never had any btc stolen from it but I am genuinely curious if this is a trust vanity address generator.

1. The one I've linked is the oldest and most reputed vanity generator I know.
2. Although I remember 99bitcoins as being a legit/ok website, I'd recommend you use the one linked from the bitcointalk thread.
3. There may be newer vanity generators that are better (maybe SegWit too?), but I didn't care that much about them after I've "met" the HD wallets.
