We've had 15 replies so far, and I'll go through them again shortly. I'm thinking of opening the discussion to senior members once the post count passes 50. What do you think of that idea? It could clear up some of the miconceptions. I'd like to keep the new members discussing the topic in the opening pages though. I think it helps them if they have to do some research rather than just reading an information post.

Do you think that the question is too technical for the beginners board?

No I don't think so. This question is a generic question that any new member should be able to answer.
If they can't, I'd questioned their motive to join this forum.

I've expanded the scope to allow posters to discuss and/or correct previous posts. Hopefully this will generate some thoughts about the topic.

Too bad it only for new members, My balls feel itchy to answer it. LoL
Anyway, I think none of the posts is a high-quality answer.
They at least should've mention and explain:
1. Height (block number)
2. Data (tx)
3. Nonce
4. Previous hash
5. Current hash

It's started to become interesting, and a few posters are making mistakes, and showing misunderstandings. I'd rather they did that, than just copy somebody else's explanation when they don't understand it. I've expanded the scope to allow posters to discuss and/or correct previous posts. Hopefully this will generate some thoughts about the topic.

I've started another merit awarding thread in beginners. In it, I ask for an explanation of the block linkage in the blockchain.
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-bitcoin-test-thread-with-loads-of-merit-to-be-awarded-4564849.

I'm hoping to shift the focus in beginners back to Bitcoin and crypto. Do you think that the question is too technical for the beginners board?
I think, people will be very much tempted to copy-past technical information in your thread from all kinds of  sources Wink
This object is deep and interesting, though it may be hard to truly understand. In my opinion, only people, who launched this technology understand it 100% with all details.
Back to your question, as far as I concerned, there are beginners on forum with good education in technical stuff, so such threads will stimulate them to systematize their knowledges and may be learn something new. For others it `ll be a good source of information. You doing a good work  Smiley

Dammit - you are right. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've restarted the thread here -
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/question-about-bitcoin-with-merit-awards-block-linkage-in-the-blockchain-4564926.

I locked the old thread - perhps a mod could delete it, as it is redundant now.
This is the one to delete - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-bitcoin-test-thread-with-loads-of-merit-to-be-awarded-4564849

It depends on what level you expect it to be answered. I would say: "each block builds upon the previous block. This ensures none of the blocks can be altered without breaking the chain".

Wikipedia would say (shortened):
Quote
A blockchain is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography. Each block typically contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, a timestamp, and transaction data. By design, a blockchain is resistant to modification of the data.

But the real answer, including technical details, hashes and other stuff I can't reproduce, would be far above the level any user (new or experienced) would need to know. You can use Bitcoin without knowing those details.
