IMO, part of the problem is that we keep thinking of Al-Qaeda and Dasch as unrelated groups. In reality Islam is experiencing a huge upsurge in popularity. Fanatical Islam is a movement and reaction to the power of the West (and now the East also). It has grown exponentially since 9/11 and now covers vast territory in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

None of this is going away in our lifetime. On 9/11 "the base" had sent about 10,000 fighters through their camps. About 3,000 were thought to be active Jihadists. Today there are perhaps 100,000 in the Islamic state alone.  Settle in for a century of war.  Undecided

sadly this seems to be very realistic.

As we play politics with ISIS it continues to grow and win. Training 5,000 Kurds isn't a winning strategy again st 75,000 Jihadists.
Obama will do nothing, It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

You cant truly embargo a terrorist group and that's really the only thing the west does anymore.

Where are these crazy figures coming from? The Pentagon, who has a stake in overestimating the size and capabilities of ISIS, tops out the high end of their estimate at 31,000 fighters. That's nowhere near the numbers being thrown out in this thread.

As for killing "hundreds of millions?" Dream big, I guess.

Let me correct myself a bit. When I say 100k I mean members not fighters. They may be willing to kill, but that does not mean they are capable. 30K trained, active fighters is probably on target, but if you include the hisba and the various other wings of dasch, it's a huge number.

They are never going to kill hundreds of millions of anything, but they are going to kill somebody.

Hundreds of millions?
Tough when their reach is restricted to a small area in the desert.

The German reporter then elaborated on how shocked he was about how “willing to kill” the ISIS fighters are. He said that they were ready to commit genocide. “They were talking about [killing] hundreds of millions. They were enthusiastic about it, and I just cannot understand that,” said Todenhofer

He warned that the Islamic State “is much stronger than we think,” and that their recruiting has brought motivated jihadis from across the globe. “Each day, hundreds of new enthusiastic fighters are arriving,” explained Todenhofer. “There is an incredible enthusiasm that I have never seen in any other war zones I have been to.”

The journalist asserted that the U.S.-led bombing campaign was not going to stop the Islamic State and its continuing jihad. He told Al Jazeera that he believed the terror group would only be stopped if fellow Sunni Iraqis would rise up against them.

Somebody paid for the training and arming of these types early on and now the recruitment process is flowing like wine. Bye bye al qaeda, hello isis. Guess who funded and trained the former and now the latter?
