@Zionatin your post history tells us that you often comment on the two most active boards as pointed out by DdmrDdmr. You may be right that there are selfish people but there are also some who are distributing smerits. Two most notable members who does that are tk808 and CryptopreneurBrainboss but even they can't keep up with the number of posts that is why they have to make their own merit giveaway threads to make it easier for them (tk808 thread, CryptopreneurBrainboss thread).

I don't post in the most popular threads to is it to my disadvantage etc etc

What do you mean by most popular threads? From your post history, you have been commenting on threads with multiple pages of replies already. I think that's another reason why you don't get merited. Your comments may be good but it's probably redundant. There could be more than five users who have said the same thing in the previous comments which is often the case in Altcoin & Bitcoin boards.

I don’t find it to be as you mention for the most, but everyone has got a different story and perspective. There are a bunch of accounts that do get merited regularly, due to the content of their posts, and, in the process, they may create some for themselves some kind of lateral posting reputation towards the account, as a result of the sum of the posts the account has made.

Altcoin Discussion and Bitcoin discussion are not amongst the most merited boards as you say (that is where you post most), but more likely, the effect of the sheer number of posts that are made there, make one’s posts disappear into the oblivion within no longer that a few hours.

If you want to take a peak at merits per board over the last few months (I’ve filtered from July 2019 onwards for a more recent view on distribution): https://public.tableau.com/shared/YZB289526?:display_count=y&:origin=viz_share_link

If you want to rank up you need to help others too.
I think you have said the right thing, receiving and giving is something that must be done for this merit system to function.

I am sorry but ranking up is not just based on quality. Many times people won't even see or read your comment. I don't post in the most popular threads to is it to my disadvantage etc etc
Theymos has said it clearly,,,
~snip
I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.
~snip
When someone wants to increase the ranking of his account, he must improve quality. Merit is basically to force people to post something of quality so they can go higher until Legendary.

So, if someone has managed to improve the quality of his posts and get out of his bad habits such as low quality posts, spam, junk then he has the right to get a new rank when the posts, activities, and merit are sufficient.

~snip
Another thing is I am empty and have no more merits to give please tell me how that helps??
Get 2 merit and so 1 sMerit can be sent to other people.

The trick as, Find threads like this and comment. Wink

Instead of people "spamming" for activity, people now make messages they know will be popular and reply to people more likely to notice them. Or supporting popular opinion to get more views. It is basically targeting traffic. You can post well and hardly ever get merits. The system is broken. So many selfish people sit with merits and not give them out. How does this help? If you want to rank up you need to help others too.
I am sorry but ranking up is not just based on quality. Many times people won't even see or read your comment. I don't post in the most popular threads to is it to my disadvantage etc etc

It feels like a popularity contest in school. I just watch rather I don't really care for merits. I don't need merits to know I can post well and help others. Another thing is I am empty and have no more merits to give please tell me how that helps??

I have 3 whole merits lol ....

I have 0 merits to send and it has been that way for weeks and weeks.

Yes if you read what he is trying to say from his rank up the journey.

There are a lot more other stories like this, so read them and get an idea of what are do's and dont's if you want to rank up.

Congratulations Bro, I see you already became a Hero Member. I know it was hard but you made it. you are now one of the few who managed to get to that rank. I hope someday we can earn that rank too.
Thanks! You already earned a lot of merits and was able to rank up faster than many users here. The next 100+ merits for the next rank is certainly doable for you.

Congratulations hero member, and it's very good that you only bump this topic to celebrate a new achievement, it will be a bit messy to create new topics for them differently, I commend you for that effort in doing the right thing.
Thank you. One topic is enough for me to post new achievements.

for me my next goal is to make it to snr member. I think this goals should be taken one step at at time, gradually moving from one rank to another, and in the end achieving it finally,
Yes, one step/rank at a time. You are doing well, you will be a senior member before you know it.

though I know some members are more intelligent than others, so they may get to their goals faster, but everyone in the end should make sure they are doing their best for themselves and also for the forum.
It is true that some members here are exceptional. You don't have to compete with them, just focus on your personal goals. You will get there eventually.

I guess it's time to bump this topic again for another achievement.

My another suggestion to all newbie/beginner/lower rank members who are still struggling is to Set A Goal.

I was once asked the same question when I ranked up to full member and I still remember that up to this day.
Now, what is your next goal? If you do not have a goal you will remain at that level for a long time.

Bumping this topic instead of creating another for the new achievement.

First of all, thank you once again to all forum members who either inspired me or thought me through your topics/comments.

Special thanks also to our local board member and to DS for helping me rank up in two months.

In addition to the suggestions I said in the OP, help build or improve your local board. Don't hesitate to ask some questions especially on topics you want more clarity. Respond to topics with the aim of learning or imparting new knowledge.

Some may argue that being active in local board does not guarantee that you will get merits and I completely agree. Some doesn't even have an active merit source but with consistent efforts to build or improve your board, I believe you'll get rewarded eventually.

I am one of them.
I was a Junior Member when merit system activated, and now I have nearly reached the Hero Member rank. That's what I did not imagine in Jan. 2018, honestly.

Well, most of us have been through in bounty hunting while gaining knowledge in here. I'm a Full Member when the merit system is implemented and honestly speaking, not all of us are gifted with amazing skills to receive those merits in just a few time. It took me at least 8 months to become a Sr. Member and now in my road to Hero Member, it will take a year. It's not a race, it's all about the experience you're getting even it takes a lot of time to reach your goal.

I can relate to a lot of things you said in this post, mainly because I am wanting to become more involved in the forum and actually contribute something I care about. Out of all the points you made, I think the best one is about reading. A lot of new members (including myself) tend to think that it's all about the amount of posts you put out. It's easy to think that, because it appears that success is based on numbers: posts, activity, merit. But most of it comes from the amount of time you spend, not typing, but reading and learning from anything you can. It's about understanding the community and how everyone thinks / what they want to hear. It's so much easier to post about something you are passionate about and others appreciate it. People can tell fairly easily who actually cares about the topic they are posting on, use that to your advantage. Don't waste your time on things you don't care about, contribute what YOU want, not what you think others want.

Thank you everyone!

Now I think within next two months, I will achieve the rank as well.
I am sure you will. It's only a matter of time.

Nice testimony. I can use some of your advices for sure
I'm looking forward to reading your posts/comments and learning from you as well.

Being able to wear avatar is a big fun in the forum (at least, I think so). It makes user a little different each other. With self-made users like you, avatars show your quality and your contribution in the forum.
I have to admit, it does feel good because it also took some real effort before I could wear one  Grin

Some will need more time, some will rank up fast, but that's what merit is made for. It pushes you to produce a better post if you want to rank up, which means it will take some time if you never do something like that. But it's certainly possible.
I couldn't agree more!

If you know enough to contribute to conversations and to help out some of the newbs with their questions, then the merits should come naturally.
Spot on!

Thanks, you did very well i will start fixing my mistakes from now on to get better and noticed on this forum too,I will keep contributing and hopeful i will be able to post my good news on here
I'm glad I could help somehow. I hope to read your success story in the coming months.

One more thing you can do is to merit those who are in need, if you have a few spandable merits...
It's part of the goal  Smiley

Let me ask you. Do you still do bounties? Do you think are they worth?
Yes I still do some bounties since I have time to spare but, unlike before, I've limited the campaigns I join.

Today, I added a new-found story, from a self-made Full member
It's an honor to be included in the list.

Its a famous saying that if you complain the system, you will remain behind but if you accept the system, you will succeed with your efforts.
Yes, it's better to use it to your advantage instead.

Hey, seems like you joined just a week or so before me Smiley It's interesting to see how those who registered around the  same time as me are ranking up. Congrats, it looks like it took you a while.
I've also noticed your fast rise. Congrats as well!

Now, what is your next goal? If you do not have a goal you will remain at that level for a long time.
The next goal now is to keep on reading and learn more technical stuffs. My knowledge on crypto and blockchain is still way behind many members here.

Another Merit for you.
You will always find solutions if you have a good idea, think about the nature of the mistake you are doing and then try to find solutions to that mistake.
you have done the right thing and get 100 Merits worth. getting it especially for beginners has become difficult and maybe impossible if you did not develop yourself.

Sometimes when I think on the merit system what I feel is Theymos really did a very awesome work by introducing merit system. It is like a cycle once one gets a merit and after sometime he/she gets upgraded to Jr.Member you get some privileges. These privilege of having a signature. The appreciation(merit) from the community for sharing something valuable encourages you to get more merits. More merits leads to rank up and more privileges.

And as all of us know getting merits is equal to getting knowledge. This community emotional motivates individuals to educate themselves more and more. This is my I said it was a awesome work done by Theymos. There may be many more on Bitcointalk who started reading because of merits.

I do remember the day when I got my first merit.

Probably took you longer than it should, but hey, at least you ended up learning your lesson in the end. Good job.

What most complainers don't realize is that if you're actually really interested in this technology and invested a reasonable amount of time to study, you don't even need to try so hard to earn merits. If you know enough to contribute to conversations and to help out some of the newbs with their questions, then the merits should come naturally.

This is not the first and I believe not the last one a forum member gives their story of ranking up.

Well, it is certainly possible to do it, just take some hard work and time if you're really serious about it. Some will need more time, some will rank up fast, but that's what merit is made for. It pushes you to produce a better post if you want to rank up, which means it will take some time if you never do something like that. But it's certainly possible.

Just kidding, I understood your feeling now. Being able to wear avatar is a big fun in the forum (at least, I think so). It makes user a little different each other. At the beginning of the merit system, I thought I will be stucked with the member rank. But later, I started to contribute to the community, mostly I tried to prevent scam and alert people, about the shitcoins around and started to get merit.
Now I think within next two months, I will achieve the rank as well.

It's possible to achieve any rank if you spend time reading, learning. Anyway, that's a great motove towards my full member rank.

A short story of how an airdrop hunter, bounty hunter, spammer, and shitposter turned into a better forum (full senior hero) member.

I only created this account before to join all airdrops I can see then, after a while, I became a bounty hunter. All things were good for me back then until the new (ranking) system was introduced. I was airdropped 10 merits and it really took me a while before I got used to the new system.

Why it took me a while?
  • Post and run - I only posted here to meet weekly quota. This is the usual attitude of bounty hunters.
  • Complain - When the merit system was introduced, I also complained about the difficulty of getting merit just like most bounty hunters.

What changes I made?
  • Became a reader - I started reading many posts in forum, not just in sections where I usually post. Everyday, I learn something new which helps me improve my posts. You may not believe it but after months of being in the forum, I don't even know who Theymos was before. I thought he was some twitter influencer or something.
  • Took advantage of the merit system - Instead of complaining, I realized I won't go anywhere if I just complain about it. Before I comment, I try to check first if my reply will be helpful. I also tried to engage in discussions rather than just leaving one comment

My suggestion to newbies and fellow hunters:
You can do the same thing as I did. You can continue to become a bounty hunter and still contribute to the forum. Do not be discouraged by the notion that hunters are spammers, use it as a fuel to improve instead.
