I think that a personal message is the best way out in this situation. Such an action on your part would indicate that you were not indifferent to the author and wanted to give him really useful advice. Many members mentioned the growth of the author’s motivation in this case, but apart from that, I consider important some kind of recognition from another member of the forum who not only saw and appreciated the post, but also devoted his time to give personal constructive recommendation.

And yep, probably from now on, maybe it is better if you avoid meriting before coffee.  Grin

I blame it on Jacqueline du Pré - she's attacking a Dvořák cello concerto with some gusto on You Tube.

I probably should be allowed on Bitcoin Talk before my early morning coffee.
I've just given this guy a merit -

Jajajaja. JC, is too early to be drunk!!!
About the thread, I think the best way to approach to an interesting newbie is by quoting his/her thread. To send a PM can be quite invasive for a first contact, from my opinion. Just comment his thread and congrats the guy and at the same time invite him to join FTt!!

You can give merits to that post/topic, an alert/message to improve his language "or ask him to join Fit 2 talk", bookmark that user's ID, return after a period and reward him more if you feel he is evolving.
In the end, a few grammatical errors can be ignored.

You can take advantage of this time to learn other languages Cheesy

haha did you do it by mistake and now have regrets?

I totally understand the move because of so many shitposts that people place to make the signature requirements. Only why not just change the option to wear a signature to members+. So with 10 merits or more?

I am a BountyHunter, trying to build up a little portfolio of cryptocurrencies because I truly believe in the blockchain. Since I have no money to invest and missed the 2017 hype, Bountyhunting is the only way for me to do so.

Because of the demotion to Newbie, I cannot enter most bounty campaigns anymore and seriously reduces my ability to earn some crypto in a fair way.

I am sure the merit was given mostly because of the sentiment in the post rather than actual "merit."
A merit is so important that you can consider it a charity these days.
There are tons of people begging for merits.
But good job man. I am sure your two merits goes a long way. I think you did the right thing. Hopefully this will encourage the user to be more helpful in the future.

I think you got the answer in the title of the topic.I would like to help them means you need to guide them how to be better person in forum through PM or just in the thread itself. If we encourage the new people then we may see a better forum with real discussion. So send them PM @JC Smiley

If you found the post good enough to give merits to, I'd just leave it at that.  The member may not be looking for English lessons and could find your effort to provide such to be condescending.

It'd be nice to know what post you're talking about, too.  In any case, I think it's way too time-consuming to try to give English lessons to everyone who needs them here, and there are many.  Just give merits if the post is worthy of them and move on.  It's hard enough to find good posts here, and I wouldn't worry about getting people to perfect their language skills.

Man OP and Jet cash seem to have the same problems. *smug grin*

This seems to be the type of member you are looking for. I suggest the PM method; but use it to explain and invite them to the "Fit to Talk" initiative. You could then end the PM with an edited version of the post, showing how you can assist them.

I only suggest the extra work as that appears to be what you want to do to improve the forums quality. This way you have put out your offer and they can choose the next step, other than that you have fulfilled your position as a cog in the merit system.

May I point out that the first and last options are the same.  Grin

Actually they are similar, but not quite the same. There is a difference in the merit awarding.

I think no matter how much you might correct them, you can't still get it right because English is not the first language for some people in the forum, I think the emphasis should be on what the poster is trying to communicate, so I don't normally castigate people without good English because you never know their story, I try to understand what they are trying to post, anyone could be in the same position if we are to learn a second language

The user may not be that good with the use of English, so correcting that particular post would not help much when they are making future posts with different contexts. But it could show then they need to personally work on their posts.

And that should be enough motivation for a user who is keen to improve, I don't think a pm is necessary.

Thanks for your thoughts, and here is a comment that I hope you will find helpful.

It is not necessary, and fairly annoying, to quote the opening post when you are the second reply in the thread.

While whatever you are going to do is definitely at your own discretion,i really feel you simply should let it be and let the merit serve as an incentive..

I may be wrong though but from my own experience, earning my merits really did a lot to serve as an incentive to me, and then I found out that it actually doesn't hurt to be helpful and useful on the forum at the expense of your time..really if one reads, learns and contributes on the forum earning merits isn't so difficult at least from newbie--jr member--member.... Maybe from the member level it gets really very difficult and improbable but not impossible anyway..

Send a PM is better option to motivate him. Pm with little bit explaination will more helpful for user. You can't reply off topic with additional tips if you edit with quote. By pm you can explain in details. May be it will take your 5 min but user might be motivate and could change his posting behaviours. Pm with edited quote and short explanation will be better (imo).

Sorry for off topic.

During visit few board I found there are some quality post of demoted users. And obviously I have visited all user post history, even they are not 100% quality poster but they aren't one liner spammer. I have merited few of them till last week. Since I am out of smerit, I am not able to help them. I am wondering for make list with post and post history. So merit source could visit easily thier profile. In case if they deserve than merit source could help them with 1 merit. Should I post on meta? Or no need to bother myself ?

Jet Cash's better half
I awarded the member 2 merits because of the concept and the sentiment in the post, but parts of the post needed some thought because of the English structure.

What would be the best thing to help the poster?

- Forget about it and look for some more posts to merit.
- Post an edited quote in the thread.
- Send the member a PM
- Just mind my own business. Smiley
