It happens all the time. You have seen what a single tweet from Elon Musk can do to Dogecoin prices. And also, back in 2017 and 2018, the cryptocurrency market was very immature. Most of the users were in their 20s, and many of them had less than 12 months of experience in dealing with crypto. It was relatively easy to manipulate some of them. And also, McAfee was one of the big names that jumped in to the cryptocurrency bandwagon very early.

I guess I just don't get it. Why would anyone invest in anything, never mind something as speculative as crypto based on a tweet or you tube video?
I know some people are going to fall for stuff like that, but enough to make a difference in coin price?

I guess I am going to have to start DaveCoin and hire a promoter for it.

He ruined so many lives. Hard working people invested their life savings in various shit projects, just because they trusted this guy. He lied to them repeatedly, saying that most of his wealth is in the form of these shitcoins (which was simply false) and that he was being paid in the form of tokens (once again, not true. He was primarily paid in USD for his promotions, although he received some tokens as well).

It seems like many people are annoyed with John McAfee, because his behavior is very difficult to forgive. Several times he promoted shitcoins
and also often gave wrong predictions, which made many people annoyed with John McAfee. Based on the last article I read John McAfee has been
found guilty of tax evasion, commits money laundering and fraud in cryptocurrency. Right now he should be in prison paying for the mistakes he has
made so far. Hopefully in prison John McAfee can introspect himself with all the crimes he has committed.

I saw his recent tweets, but the last news article related to him is from 6th March and he was jailed at that point. I don't think that he has been freed since then, as the charges are quite serious. But it is very difficult to confirm this, as there has been no news coverage on him for the last one week. Personally I don't think that he has been freed, as it would be impossible to get a bail on such a short duration. I believe someone else is making the tweets on his behalf.

McAfee was being investigated for his wrong doings for quite long time, he knew it and that's why he was on the run, he was a bit of a clown and provoked the US authorities with his comments on Twitter.
He promoted many scam coins like SAFEX and charge money for this, he never warn investors that his advice was paid & he never warn anybody of the consequences of buying such scams.

In 2018 they got lucky and got a Canadian lawyer with the name of Stephen Kines to invest $5mil and that is how they founded the exchange Xcalibra with the help of Dascoin and Onecoin scammers.

I do not think the circumstances are the same, John McAfee received payments from new projects to promote their coins and there are even some accusations that he dumped some coins after posting his tweets while Elon Musk is just posting some tweets regarding his holdings, while the difference may not seem to be that important I think it is, so Elon does not have anything to worry about, John McAfee on the other hand will have a difficult time proving his innocence.

In some cases, the promoters fled with all the money from investors. The investors were left with some worthless shitcoins and tokens in their wallet. McAfee was aware of these risks from the very beginning, but he kept promoting them because of his greed. In other cases, McAfee scrammed the ICO promoters themselves by refusing to promote the projects after some time. Here also, it was the investors who lost out in the end.

I am happy that finally justice can be served, because there are so many frauds in the world of cryptocurrency that are untouched by the law.
But regarding the fraud committed by John McAfee, it turns out that he can be punished, hopefully McAfee can realize his mistake after being
in prison. Because so many victims are hurt by McAfee because he promotes scam projects that benefit him. This is a lesson for all of us not

Mcafee just looking for money with that tweet and he just doing the same mistake like 2017-2018 period.

This. He's done more bad than you could ever imagine. He made people lose a LOT of money and we can only wonder what else to add to this list above.

And the problem that he had made before was the pump and dump for altcoins that paid him. Yes, it wasn't free, he did that on a purpose and the amount of payment that he has received from those projects he had made a pump was massive.
Aside from that problem, there are other things that he had made.

Yes, this guy is extremely odious, starting from his statements about the Bitcoin price and finishing with his videos and projects he promoted. Lots of people trusted his old reputation and old achievements I think, that's why his support influenced much on on people. But the golden rule is remember always about thinking twice before investing, and do not trust even famius names.

If indeed John McAfee had committed a crime that caused many people to suffer losses, he should have been punished for his actions. So far, McAfee has done a lot of shitCoin promotions which have resulted in many people losing their assets. Is that why he's in prison?

Rubbish. To give an idea about what he did:

1. Murdered an individual named Gregory V Faull.
2. Tax evasion in the United States
3. Promoted known scams, resulting in losses of millions of USD
4. Indulged in threats and blackmail
5. Tarnished the image of cryptocurrency in general

I wouldn't have bothered if he was all talk and no action. But the reality is that he scammed cryptocurrency users of their hard earned money. I just hope that he will rot in prison for the rest of his miserable life.

John McAfee was arrested almost 6 months back. And since then he is imprisoned in Spain (somewhere near Barcelona). The extradition is going to take a lot of time, if it ever happens. Take the case of Alexander Vinnik. He was arrested almost 4 years ago in Greece and the Americans have been trying to get him extradited ever since. In 2020, he was extradited to France, but till now the Americans haven't got what they wanted.

For the most part current regulations that apply to the stock markets should apply to the market of cryptocurrencies, governments have refused to acknowledge this on the law because they do not want to give legitimacy to the market, but since now they are realizing there is no way to stop this market they might as well apply those laws, we will have to see what comes from the accusations however we know for a fact that he promoted altcoins and if he sold his coins just after telling everyone to buy and used insider information so he could know the best moment to do this then he is most likely guilty of a crime and they could make an example out of him and send him to jail.

They thought it's just all the same and this guy has put some doubt in the heart of the people where they think cryptocurrency investment is just another way of fooling people to get their money from them. Thankfully now it's been cleared out and most of the people know already what is the cause of their losses in their crypto investment and that's because they listen to such kinds of guys in the crypto industry and they didn't spend enough time to research on their own. Those who take their time to find the truth about real investment in cryptocurrency are now celebrating their wise decisions.

That's beside the pay the team is paying to Macaffee every tweet he does for the project which is $100k. The money he got by simply promoting it via tweet is more than a year of my hard labor.
There is a project that survived to this day which is the YouCoin Engine, its still trading as far as I know.

People stopped believing in him as early as 2019, after he promoted dozens of scams. Depending on the project, McAfee demanded up to 20% of the total supply of tokens to promote them. The promoters were happy, because these tokens didn't cost them anything. And one important factor to remember here is that McAfee not just cheated the cryptocurrency users, but at times he also double crossed the ICOs. He received huge amounts from projects such as Latium, Cpollo, Simmitri and Docademic to promote them, but never fulfilled the obligations to do so. 

He would just easily escaped out such issue even though he would be freed in situation like this but the damage that had been done when it comes to his reputation will really remain forever which means

people would hear of any of his suggestions of sentiments would really already turn out to be a joke for anybody since he had been known about shilling out for his own sake or making money then
no one would really be believing on him this time.

This is what he truly deserves on manipulating out those noobs in the market by shilling out those shitty projects and telling that it is worth.Sounds not really that much of a heavy

the difference between McAfee and Musk, is that Musk is not receiving anything to promote doge or bitcoin. it is his own accord why he's tweeting something related to crypto. whereas, McAfee, before he tweeted something for a particular project before, he was being paid by those projects. remember the time here in the forum, when the title of the project says endorsed by McAfee. that was their bait here to attract other investors. and for sure, McAfee was paid to endorse their project.

I already saw some peeps here saying that Elon is doing the same. Dude, he is the second richest man in the world. He is not promoting shitcoins and scams. Everytime a celebrity mentions bitcoin that is already in itself promoting the cryptocurrency, then all of them should be charged with manipulation, right? Elon musk right now is being an asset to the US government and I don't think he will be charged for promoting DOGE.

Great to see him get what he deserves. He lied and cheated, sold his support to shitcoin devs for a few hundred dollars. He knew what he was doing and he has the money to get good lawyers. People aren't going to start "free McAfee" campaigns or anything like that. He's a selloff with no dignity and that's all I can say about him. Such things, in my opinion, are completely expected and "normal" for the crypto market. We all know that the crypto market is very volatile and very sensitive to manipulation by different people, even through the most innocent tweet on social networks. We've seen such examples with Dodgecoin and Elon Musk's speech and even with Bitcoin, so I'm not personally surprised.

And I'm not sure how big a crime it is to buy a coin at a very low price (after all, that's the goal of the market) and then advertise it on social media and raise the price. In my opinion, it may be difficult to prove, but still the laws in the United States on this topic are a little stricter and we will see how far the process will go.

I guess the charge sheet refers to just one scams. McAfee promoted dozens of scams, and might have earned more than $100 million from them. If I am not wrong, he was charging $100,000 or so for a single tweet. And he made hundreds of tweets during this period. On top of this, he received royalty payments from various scam projects that he promoted. BTW, I would like to know how the authorities are planning to go ahead with inquiry in to the murder of Gregory Viant Faull. McAfee is the prime accused.

It's not really surprising though. He started shilling shitcoins during the 2017 hype and made millions of money (I really doubt he only made $2,000,000 from those altcoins he pump). He basically scammed millions of users in the process just from one tweet alone. If you're from 2017, then you wouldn't forgot the infamous ETN pump.

No, its not. What made you think the crypto market is unregulated? The regulatory bodies are catching up. Eventually they are applying policies slowly that no one is realizing how heavily the crypto market is now regulated.

I think we all know by now that influential people in the crypto industry are using their huge following for their own personal gain or at least with biases on their own so since one of the big fish is caught and charged now they should at least now think twice of what they are typing before they publish it online. Has been accused of buying cryptocurrency assets before the campaign on twitter alleging that they paid another 11 million from cryptocurrency start ups to promote their assets on twitter which was not disclosed to investors. The emerging cryptocurrency market has exploited a widely used social media platform and enthusiasm among investors he invests a lot of money but everything will not end easily.

McAfee is one of the early investor on cryptocurrency. In between he got into paid promotion on various worthless projects. This way he lost his reputation as an investor and as a personality who is much praised by common people who are new to the cryptocurrency network. Fraudulent activities are common with cryptocurrency, and we need to be active to stay on the safer side.

I have to disagree. Do you remember what happened in early 2020? Craig Wright first crashed the price of BSV, by filing lawsuits. Once he accumulated enough coins, he did a pump, which increased the price by around 200%. And at this point, again he sold most of his coins. The entire process lasted 2-3 months and gave him a considerable profit. Normally whales do pump-and-dump. In this case, it was dump-pump-dump.

Money laundering and exploision were pointed out for the two liable person. Just when I thought cryptocurrency can't be controlled but after reading some content related to this, I realized how they manipulate prices buy buying tons of crypto coins to inflate and deflate it.

McAfee can defend it to the court but I don't think US Justice Dept  will gonna easy with this one as it was a heavy accusations to the both of them.

Elon's is a bit different. He just mentions Dogecoin and Bitcoin without really saying anything concrete. Even if we do assume that Elon makes money from this, he technically isn't deceiving anyone simply by memeing. Something tells me that he has done his homework on this and that we're in for a hell of a ride in the near future.

McAfee on the other hand, actively promotes the coins he's shilling for by saying they're the future, they have good potential, etc., which is clearly deceptive considering he was earning money from it behind the scenes.

This isn't the first time McAfee has been accused of fraud, right? , and the accusations this time around have been in quite a dangerous case, promoting crypto with whatever purpose is expected
but a Crypto influencer does promote a product / coin right? , and influencers really like to lie with the aim that the items they promote sell well, so what's the problem if McAfee is an influencer there is no problem if he promotes coins that dare to pay him dearly.

The Justice department's website gave a detailed version on what McAfee is charged with basically it is for pumping and dumping which is his first scheme and the the second one is the hyping up of ICOs that he mainly tweets because he has a large group of following in Twitter.


So what really got my attention is the authorities have considered pumping and dumping as fraud now. Pumping and dumping in itself isn't the fraud but the lies and deception the person is doing is what considered the fraud here. McAfee for example has a hidden agenda while he bought those crypto early he then Tweets misleading information and sometimes pure lies just to influence the market which he really do as he knows he has a large following in Twitter.

Besides profiting from investing in those coins, he was paid for every tweet he posted to promote a new project.

I think it's not different from what Elon did, but, I'll just leave it to the fate whatever is going to come or not on him.There are good influencers actually but by the time you'll know that they're not good anymore is when they're starting to promote projects that you know are just pump and dump schemes.

If you are a celebrity you need to be responsible what you say in a public platform and he was literally cheating all his followers by advising them to invest in scam projects. You are doing a great disservice to the cryptocurrency sector by comparing a successful businessmen such as Elon Musk with a criminal like John McAfee. Elon Musk never benefited from any of his tweets, simply because he doesn't own any cryptocurrency. On the other hand, his endorsal resulted in massive profits for early adopters within the cryptocurrency sector. IMO, we should be thankful to him.

On the other hand, John McAfee knowingly promoted scam projects in return for monetary payments. A lot of cryptocurrency enthusiasts trusted him and put their hard earned money in these scam projects. All of that money vanished. Alleged? Crypto influencers have been doing it for years. McAfee himself didn't make it a secret that he was charging per Tweet, and most of today's influencers have a rate you pay, they say.

None of them would say they're deliberately scamming, but their actions (most take the promoted tokens at huge discount in lieu of cash payments, and then dump them after the shill) to me very easily amount to fraud.

I don't think it can affect Bitcoin at any ways. The only person who really represents Bitcoin is Satoshi.

He fooled everyone during the ICO hype, made a lot of money for himself, being paid handsomely just to shill from some shit and scam projects. Now, he has to face the music, brilliant mind, genius, but borderline psychotic.

He is high profile that's why he was targeted by the US government, probably sending the message again to the would be large scale personality scammers out there that their days are going to come to an end.

He is generally a strong supporter of cryptocurrencies but indeed he had promoted some shitcoins when the ICO market was booming and made a good amount of money through his shady activities. Those were way too evident when his name was one of the main promotional point for the ICOs. Now later when most ICO tokens became a disaster, investors lost millions of dollars to these scammers.

I wouldn't say Mcafee was directly involved in such scams but he definitely supported such initiatives. Hopefully he gets a light punishment because the mains scammers are mostly roaming free till date!

John McAfee has been promoting shitcoins since many years and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets charged for crypto fraud.
Money laundering is something which is hard to prove in cryptocurrency. They can charge anybody for money laundering.
Even Charlie Shrem was accused of money laundering for running BitInstant.

Should anyone even care what happens to him? After publicly admitting that he made fools of everyone who believed that BTC would be worth $1 million by 2020, and after using his influence to inflict surely great financial damage on individuals but also on governments because he evaded paying taxes, does anyone think he should be allowed to live in peace for the rest of his life given that he is 75 years old?

Unless he dies in a Spanish prison, his extradition to the US is only a matter of time.

For whatever it's worth, crypto users should stop taking tweets from prominent individuals as a marker to invest in one cryptocurrency or the other, that's the only way this 'fraud' committed by John McAfee can be checked, and to be fair to John, there are quite a lot of people doing the same very thing on social media, they may not be as prominent or dubious as John, but it's the same strategy over and over again. Elon Musk's tweets also causes hype, and while he may not have the same intentions as John, or who knows, he could prolly be making profits out of those crypto endorsing tweets. But the thing is, it's 'sinful' investing in a coin solely cause a prominent individuals tweet speaks good of it, you'll more often than not be left with a dumped coin.

This is not the first time McAfee has been accused of fraud, and the accusations this time have led him to stumble upon a fairly dangerous case, undertaking crypto promotion with whatever purpose is expected, but if there is an act of fraud and harms the party, it must be prosecuted legally. We're not sure here that he's just promoting to his followers on Twitter, but he can play behind the scenes. and as a result Jimmy was involved in the actions taken by them.

If everyone would be charged for same pump and dumps than it would be most crypto influencers on twitter who are doing same schemes and not just McAfee.
McAfee is still in Spain charged for tax evasion and I doubt we are ever going to see him in US again, and with his old age we can't even expect him to live much longer.
I feel a bit sorry for him but he ruined his own health and brain with drugs and alcohol overuse.

I am not sure whether the court will take a favorable stance towards McAfee. He is accused in a number of crimes, including one case of murder. The Americans are trying to get him extradited for some time, but this guy managed to avoid that until now. Once he is deported back to the United States, he will be tried for the 2012 murder of Gregory Faull. A few years back, a US Federal District judge ordered McAfee to pay a compensation of $25 million, but he ignored the judgement. 

lol. I read an article about this yesterday and this is a copy paste from it tho. He is in detention in Spain for tax fraud and being accused of many charges. Most likely he will be kicked to US so the court can milk him few millions and the case will be settled, unless his lawyer is not good enough to prevent him from visiting a 5* prison for few weeks.

I don't wish ill on anyone but I'm glad he's no longer the Bitcoin Evangelist of the moment. When I first became interested in Bitcoin he was, and the truth is he has too much dirty business surrounding him to be a good representative for us.

This is just a tip of the iceberg. McAfee promoted dozens of scam projects, and he charged $105,000 for a single tweet. He made tens of millions of USD (if not hundreds of millions) from these scams. When angry investors confronted him later, he refused to listen and abused them. For me, alongside Mark Karpeles and Craig Wright, John McAfee ranks as one of the worst enemies of cryptocurrency. I hope he will spend the rest of the his miserable life behind bars, without any possibility of a parole.

I thought crypto markets were unregulated but on the other hand a fraud is a fraud no matter what form it is in. And money laundering is a kind of a joker card. You can pretty much arrest anybody with this accusation.

Is there even one crypto business out there can prove that they not laundering money? It is impossible.
