It is better look each miner and read which one still supports cuda 9 i guess. If miner supports and you have chosen right coin for that it will work.

I got a card from a cousin of mine, a GTX 980 and it plays games on my desktop very well bit I can't get it to work with Nicehash, I got error here and there, as per my old post on here I want to use this card as experiment to dive into how crypto mining works and now I don't know, is there any mining app that can work with GTX 980? Thank you
Try mining ethereum classic

Install the latest video card drivers and try all the miners that the pools offer you.
miner download links

Try to find a working miner. Although what do you want to get? 6 cents in Ethereum Classic coins every day with a payment for electricity several times more.

Try to use NiceHash Legacy Forkfix
https://www.nicehash.com/blog/post/nicehash-miner-legacy-1-9-0-22

Or you can mine directly, without Nicehash
Which coin do you want to mine? I can suggest a miner for you
