My 750W PSU finally popped today while being connected to just 4 GPUs:

2x Gtx 1060
1x Gtx 970
1x Rx 470

Haven't tested if my GPUs are undamaged but the burnt smell seems to be only coming from the PSU.

Hopefully my mobo and cpu are also ok. Any advice on what to do before buying another PSU?

buy a rm 1000 i they are the best one for me, can easily handle 6 x 1070 with a bit lower tdp and it's not so expensive, with that config i would point the nvidia at lbry and the amd at ETH

I suggest getting something like https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41Te3B6CDqL._SY300_.jpg to understand the overall wattage of your build

GTX are power hunger cards
You will need at least a 1200w quality PSU

Indeed, I think you need the true rated PSU and a high wattage. Lucky that your other hardware is not affected. Be careful next time, check and recheck before powering it on next time.

Wait ... what ... i have to fry a mining rig to be a miner? That makes no sense, but if that's what it takes, I don't want to be a miner.

So did you test your cards? I am sure they are ok, it has happened to me last year and everythings was fine, just the psu that was dead.

Thanks guys. I was using an FSP HYDRO 750W PSU. Supposedly i think it was gold rated.

Selling off my GTX 970 today and getting another 1060. RX 470s hopefully but theyre outta stock everywhere.
Might use a 850W corsair to power this time.

Any advice what to do with the 750w psu? Can i still use the cables (SATA, 8/6 pin, etc) or are they fried too?

IN addition to the watts consumed you also need to ensure that your PSU has enough Amps on the 12v rail(s) for 4 GPUs.  As already mentioned above, you were pushing it with those 4 GPUs, especially if not heavily undervolted or if it was an off brand unit.

Welcome to mining btw!

What make/model PSU was it? Please share.

Also, why did you have AMD and Nvidia on the same system? How does that work with drivers and all?

By my math you're at ~500w without even adding your CPU/Board/Fans and SSD/HDD.

ideally you should not exceed 80% of your PSU's capability as a sustained load.

Shooting from the hip, you'd be good with a 1000W

Get a higher rating and quality psu , calculate your power draw limits again , for nVidia cards give them some more watts to breath.

Um, find how many watts each card takes and add them together. Add say 150w for the mobo.
What is the total watts used? Add 20% to that and get a PSU to deliver it...
