What’s your speculation on this? For me, maybe it’s only been recovered now after being forgotten for years…

That was a huge one and long lasted inactive wallet holding such about of bitcoin. It's false to believe one can actually hold bitcoin for over 14 years like that without services of transactions being made since those while. So it's assumed that such holder must be of access restrictions of the wallet and has just unlocked the keys.

Not your keys, not your coins!
Thought I'd share this news I read last night.
This super old wallet transaction was discussed 5 days ago in Satoshi-era wallet (Jan 2009) moves 50 BTC.

The old wallet can belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, Hal Finney or very early Bitcoin miners like Cypherpunks or a famous guy James Howells. It is impossible to know who is owner of that wallet.

There was a different Satoshi era bitcoiner who moved funds to Kraken this Tuesday morning. If they’ve been hodling since the very beginning, there is no doubt that they have enough money to meet all their financial needs by now and are ready to cash out.

But why moved now? and I doubt that they are going to cash out as early as this time, we haven't even touch 6 digits.

This is the bitcoin address for those who wanted to see: 1C4rE41Kox3jZbdJT9yatyh4H2fMxP8qmD

https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1C4rE41Kox3jZbdJT9yatyh4H2fMxP8qmD

As you can see it had some transactions before 2024, it received from bc1qt85ftkvey7q08jsn86tezxswgpet7d3tc7c3hl, who also sends some to vanity addresses such as:

  • 1Lets1xxxx1use1xxxxxxxxxxxy2EaMkJ
  • 1fuLL1xxxx1power1xxxxxxxxxxzatvCK
  • 1of1xxxxx1anonymity1xxxxxxxz9JzFN
  • 1See1xxxx1memo1xxxxxxxxxxxxxBuhPF
  • 1dot1xxxxx1sv1xxxxxxxxxxxxxwYqEEt
  • 1topic1xxx1hmwyda1xxxxxxxxxvo8wMn
  • 1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxy1kmdGr

Now the 50 BTC sits on bc1qqhvkehsyr2rlrdvq4udtp8tfj75k6kcnd9n7lq.

Yeah, it's a mystery, and then again, as the OP said, around ~500 BTC were moved from their stasis state, and it will remain a speculation why so.
In any case, it seems like a trend of sorts or some trigger was given for this chain of events to happen. That's my opinion.

I'll ask the same question I always ask on this repeated subject: why do you think the person who owned this address only owned this address? Is it so hard to believe that the early adopters didn't stop acquiring bitcoin after the early days and have lots of other addresses with coins in them acquired over the years?

With that in mind, this story is no longer that interesting, is it? Because now it is some coins inside a bigger wallet that are moving from one address to another.

P.S. This also counters that old speculation that "Satoshi owns a million bitcoins"...
At first, that was my speculation, but after digging deeper and reading from different sources, I found that these are probably early investors with multiple wallets or addresses, all owned by a single person or entity. What’s intriguing is that just recently, there’s been a trend of major transfers, each for 50 BTC.

As mentioned in this article:

Quote
On September 20, 2024, five distinct wallets, each transferring 50 BTC, were tracked by the on-chain transaction monitor, Whale Alert.

Although this isn’t the first time old wallets, also known as Satoshi-era wallets, have moved funds, the fact that five wallets, each holding 50 BTC, are possibly controlled by the same owner is worth noting. I just thought I’d share this news to spark some speculation and get the community talking since it's interesting for those who haven’t been following the big news in crypto.
And there’s more.
Quote
This isn’t the first time dormant Bitcoin wallets have come to life. Earlier this year, a wallet inactive for over 12 years moved 500 BTC, and another wallet dormant for over 10 years became active in April 2023.

So, if I hadn’t searched for this info, I wouldn’t have known that 500 BTC had been moved this year... And surprisingly, instead of triggering a market dump, the market is actually on the rise right now.

But what I find strange according to the news is:
Quote
However, it is worth noting that an abnormally high number of ancient Bitcoin wallets were activated this September. On Sept. 20, there were several extremely rare transfers from wallets that were created all the way back in 2009.
Why have these wallets remained dormant for so long? And why are they being recovered at this time after all these years? I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if someone is behind this intentionally?

Familiar with the Patoshi pattern? Smiley

Considering that, it's not impossible for one of Satoshi's wallets to activate. It's believed that in the early days, he was the first miner and controls a massive amount of Bitcoin--close to 1 million BTC spread across different wallets.

There have been several transactions in the past days from original bitcoin holders who were here since the beginning. This has led to speculation about their possible identity and their reasons for selling. I don’t think it is Satoshi making these transfers but it could be some early bitcoiner that had some interactions with him in those early days. Maybe somebody found their lost keys or maybe they just wanted to move their coins to more secure storage.

I don't know exactly, but perhaps the closest reason is actually to recover the wallet after forgetting it all these years.

According to data provided by Whale Alert, one of the most widely used crypto wallet tracking services, a Bitcoin address containing 50 BTC ($3.1 million at current prices) emerged from hibernation earlier today for the first time in more than 14 years.
