I don't like the unity interface so I'm still on gnome 2.x in 10.10, probably have to switch to xfce eventually.  I hear wow works well on wine, you might have trouble with other games though.  Keep in mind that Ubuntu focuses on Gnome the most, so the kde version might not be as well polished.

I like KDE4...but I'm running opensuse....they made it their default desktop, so I just go with it.

But it don't matter what desktop you use, the terminal window always looks the same....and that's probably where you will be spending most of your time. Smiley

The general comparison Ive found to be relatively accurate is that KDE has a more windows feel and gnome is more of a mac or natively linux interface style. KDE has a lot of nice eye candy however check out compiz fusion on gnome, it has some amazing affects. For WoW check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft. It can be problematic at times but if your considering mining your rig should be able to handle the tax. As far as which desktop is better, I personally use gnome right now but I'll switch every few months just for variety.

Getting ready to build a Linux box finally and although I've decided on Ubuntu, reading about and seeing pictures of the KDE desktop environment have really dragged my attention into that direction. It just looks so damn saucy. It seems to be every bit as much eye candy as any Microsoft or Apple OS, and possibly more at that.

Anyone have experience with Kubuntu, preferably the 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" release? I'd love to get some feedback from fellow miners. I hope this OS really is as good as it looks to be, and if I can manage to play WoW via Wine or another method to play Windows-based games, I'll never look back! There won't be any reason left to bother with Windows anymore for me if this is the case.
