I've had few small tasks for translating English documents into Korean and vice versa. If you need any Bitcoin related document translate into Korean, please feel free to contact me and I will see if I can dedicate some time translate or assist in translation.

Huh

Good Infomation..

Thank you!!

Hello Korean speakers,

I have been thinking this weekend about the best font to use for the Base58 bitcoin addresses.   They are particularly ugly things to show on a user interface, no doubt about it.

I realised that writing the Base58 symbols in a latin font is neither aesthetically pleasing nor easy to pronounce. Try pronouncing:

1AhN6rPdrMuKBGFDKR1k9A8SCLYaNgXhty

I have an idea that it would be possible to represent the 58 letters used in Base58 in a custom font which looks like a simplified Hangul.   I wanted to ask your advice.

Imagine you use a cutdown version of the Korean alphabet using the :
   + first 8 consonants
   + first 8 vowels (6 vowels + , say, the first 2 iotised)

This means you can represent 3 bits + 3 bits = 6 bits of codepoints in each consonant + vowel combination.
This is 2^6 = 64 codepoints so we can represent all the Base58 letters.

In Hangul, this would be using just diglyphs rather than the more usual triglyphs. They would be:

1) Inital consonant (one of the eight)
followed by
2) Medial vowel (one of the eight).

The consonant and vowel would combine in the usual Hangul way to create one symbol, which would be rendered using a custom font.

(There would be no finals)

Would this be legible to a native Korean ?
I am thinking that with the correct choice of consonants and vowels it would read like a 'Baby Korean'.

The point of all this is:

1) The Base58 would look really cool written in the simplified Hangul with diglyphs.
2) You can actually pronounce it !
3) You can have a custom font which just substitutes each of the current Base58 letters for a Hangul diglyph.

To make the representation easier to read I suggest we separate the diglyphs into groups of 4 with a space in between.  These 'words' would be then represent 4 * 6 = 24bits i.e. 3 bytes

A 34 character Base58 bitcoin address would then be written as 34 diglyphs and you would pronounce it, say:

ga nya du la   mi beo su li    gya no di lyeo
ma bi so ma    geo na deo li   mu ba seo so
na dya la ma   beo su la gi    nyeo ga

(This is probably a bit wrong - I am not sure which letters can be used as initials and which consonant-vowel combinations are valid.)

For non-Koreans they would probably just use shape recognition to see if an address was the same as on a website. As it is a only an applied font you could switch it on/off easily to show the latin characters. Just have a button to click to switch between the two.

If non-Koreans wanted to learn how to pronounce it, they would have to learn 8 consonants and 8 vowels - less than learning the Nato phonetic alphabet.

What do native Korean speakers think about this idea ?

:-)

Jim

Edit: cutting and pasting diglyphs from this thread, a 34 character Base58 address using the proposed coding would look vaguely like this:

Ok, so it takes me forever to type in hangul, jeez. I need a hangul keyboard.

Nothing yet has happened with BFL, still waiting on the first shipments.  The first "live" demo I did went fairly well, but waiting on some production units.  I gave them a number of suggestions to increase their hashrate and lower power consumption; they went back to the drawing board on the power distribution system and also on how they handle getwork requests.  I think they are going to be about 250 - 300% over initial power estimates (60w - 70w instead of 20w) and somewhere right around their target hashrate.  The demo unit I saw was around 800 MH/s, down about 20% from their target, but they had a LOT of inefficiencies in the debug code that could be rectified fairly easily.

My decidedly unqualified opinion is that it's going to be the best FPGA solution on the market, assuming they start shipping in the next week or two like they plan, for at least a few months if not upwards of into a half year at least.  At the very least, it will be the most polished and best looking solution at a competitive hashrate and price.

Ok, so how the hell do I enter Hangul in Chrome or Firefox?  The few times I've needed to write Hangul, I just cut and paste the characters I want, so it takes my like a month to "type" out a paragraph. Back in the DOS days, I had a hangul word processor, but it was tedious to enter on a QWERTY keyboard (two keys per usually), so what's the modern method of data entry in hangul?

Hi,

Would anyone here be interested in translating MultiBit into Korean ?
We have most of the European languages translated, Russian, Hindi and mainland Chinese but no Korean yet.

If you are interested we have set Korean up on our translation website - http://translate.multibit.org

It takes about an evening to translate the source text.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

I wouldn't go so far as to say no one uses cash here, but I will agree that the banking system is generally pretty good.

Post edited. I mispoke. We use cards quite a lot more than bank transfers. Just wanted to make it clear that unless you're shopping on the street, cash is not necessary. Also, since the banks will give you a debit card minutes after setting up an account, there is no real need to worry.

Yeah, cards are the method of choice for most for sure. With the vast array of loyalty programs out there it's hard not to.

So is electricity more expensive than in the UK?

first: thanks for the info on your projects, sounds ambitious and very cool! also thanks for the info on wifi (you're saying there's open hotspots everywhere? what more do you need ^^)

Back to the transaction: 25 BTC is a good start. I don't need to exchange everything via bitcoins and I wont rely on it, obviously (fallback is to use options offered by my german bank or credit card to get cash).
Getting some cash from you and/or your colleagues would be awesome, though, so I could brag about it (hey, I use bitcoins paying for my vacation ^^) and also use it to advertise bitcoin as a way to get a hold of local currency.

I'd almost like to buy all 100 from you just so you could say that to your friends. lol. my life right now is devoted to making Bitcoin usable everywhere. Instead of just trading Bitcoins in for cash directly, why don't you just keep a tab for 3 weeks and send me bitcoins and I can send you KRW whenever you need it? Seems like a much more frugal thing for the both of us, especially since my contract work pays me daily (e.g. It's easier to send you $100 a day when you're here then it is to send you $500 as soon as you get here), and you shouldn't be selling Bitcoins right now anway IMHO.

I don't understand... keep a tab? how would you send me $100 (in W cash) every day? You use paper money to buy food, pay hostel, etc, right? please explain.

P.S. Bitcoiners have to stick together. Your girlfriend probably has everything handled, but if you need anything when you get here, I'm a phone call away.

I really appreciate that! Would you pm me your contanct info?

Hello Korean Bitcoiners!

Sorry I am writing in english, I do not speak Korean language.

I will come to visit your country in September.

I thought maybe it's a good idea to buy some KRW from local people there and save some exchange fees Wink

Does anyone want to buy some BTC for KRW in Seoul in the middle of September?

cheers,
molecular

haha. I'm in. You know I'm starting the Korean National Bitcoin Exchange? You'll be able to do that online pretty soon. Wink

What part are you coming to?

Seoul first. Will visit my girlfirend's relatives who live there, she's half-korean. After a week or so on Seoul we would like to travel around, do some hiking... will be there for 3 weeks.

I'm looking to do a cash transaction, buying KRW for bitcoins, so using your exchange is probably not practicable for me, since I would have to be able to get the cash out somehow...

Would you be willing to meet in person and make a trade? I would like to cash in maybe around 50 to 100 bitcoins (of course depending on the exchange rate in september). How would we determine the exchange rate, would you charge a fee?

Fees wouldn't be necessary, but I'd have to go by the KRW > USD > BTC exchange rates if that's alright with you. 50 to 100? I was expecting a much smaller number. No worries. Count me in for 25 for sure and I'll ask around my office for the other 25~75.

No fees, cool! No problem going throug KRW > USD > BTC to get the rate, that's fine with me. Likely still better than using my bank.

Please tell me when your exchange is up, so I can check it out ^^. Will it be an exchange that keeps balances and takes care of withdrawing / depositing or will it just be a "matching" site, where the users have to make the transactions themselves?

A side question: I've been trying to find out wether or not I could use my mobile (sony ericsson xperia hd mini pro) in Korea. It seems your GSM networks use a different frequency (2100Mhz). what about CDMA/UMTS,...
I'm sorry to bother you with this.. but maybe it's best to ask someone local. Is it possible to get mobile internet for 3 weeks cheaply in korea? I'd really love to be able to use google maps and translate while on the run. It would also simplify (make more secure) giving you BTC (ssh -> bitcoin sendtoaddress) any hints/ideas for a traveller?

하루에 들어오는 양이 불규칙하고 심지어 하루에 1BTC도 안나오는 경우가.. -_-;;

말씀하신대로 stat을 지연해서 알려주는 deepbit이나, BTC Guild 같은 곳에서는 사용할 수 없습니다 -_-;

그냥 CPU로도 가능하긴 한데 너무너무 느려서 안하느니만 못하거든요;
