China does bribes all the damn time.  (Welcome to human nature)  What matters is the importance of the person taking the bribe and how visible they are.  China cannot be Seen to be doing bad things people that can clearly seen to be doing bad things are punished.  I am surprised Jack Ma wasn't executed honestly. (gov can do no wrong!)

The Chinese government has strong laws and frowns against bribery and collection of bribe. The death sentence is too strong a judgement for collecting bribe (life imprisonment should have been considered). However, examples that have been made with people that have defaulted like Mr Lai Xiaomin will surely send a strong message to other corrupt officials that collection of bribe in the country is a "no no" and could cost them their life.

Serious question for the community, as this is the first I've heard of someone being executed for taking bribes(215million euros). Does it seem like a reasonable action given his crime? from publications I've read, executions that aren't mitigated into life sentences are rare.

Does this set a new precedent for how other countries deal with similar cases?

What are your thoughts?

Quote: Mr. Lai was sentenced to death in early January, an unusual sentence in China against a top economic leader. The court had also found him guilty of "polygamy" - which is illegal in china
