When I give something away as a present it's the recipients responsibility to keep it safe. If they throw it away - bad luck.
Yeah, I don't see what's the difference between giving cash/cheque/voucher etc. If you explain its worth and the potential investment opportunity, and if then people still don't value or look after it; then that's their problem.

When you're giving coin as a gift, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping a backup. Just make sure it's very secure -- don't reimport and decrypt the private keys unless they've lost them.
As for people not valuing it, I do my best to sell people on it, but not everyone's going to meet you halfway; their loss!

People won't value BTC gifts. They got it for free; they will think it was nothing for you to give it to them either (although you could have bought them a 55" TV with the Bitcoins). A "donation was made in their name" card will probably be as appreciated.
There is a recent threads about tracking down the previous Christmas recipients of 1 BTC Casascius coins - now worth over $1000. Usually lost. I gave a friend of mine a paper wallet, and told him if he didn't lose it, I would send $50 worth of BTC to it in a month. Lost.

I made altcoin "coins" -- I can't afford to give significant amounts of value so I'm going with ~15mBTC denominations of altcoins that are more unstable and lottery ticket-like. Altcoins also have the advantage that I can choose coins particular people might be interested in (one person has a nice CPU they don't use much that can mine XPM, another has a website that could use a .bit address, etc). I wanted them to look metal so I wrapped cardboard disks in aluminum foil (impossible to get to the private key without tearing the foil). The only way I could find to draw permanently on aluminum foil was to print the design/QR code, trace it onto the sticky side of clear tape, and stick the tape to aluminum foil. The deterrent to counterfeiting my coins is the patience required to hand-draw QR codes that actually scan =P

As well as you can present a banknote which is lie in your pocket. As I say. Or, if it sounds better, you can present a car or a house without rewriting it's ownership in local authority. Presents of such sort when the grantor remains in a full control of a present looks strange isn't it?

Yeah it's a gift meaning you are paying for it out of pocket willingly. Are you going to go back and steal the coins after you've gifted them away? Makes no sense.
You could also argue that if you give giftcards you might clone them first
