I picked up one of these with my bitcoin profits and haven't looked back. Brought my temps from about 69*C to about 45*C on my 5830 clocked at 960MHz.

Last save  GPU temperature °C.                       :  ?

Optimal temperature °C  for GPU running 24/7   :   ?

Optimal fan fan speed %                                  :  ?

Under 100C but many cards will work fine at 105 or more.

Under 80C (my GPUs are 76-77C, 74C and 71C - 6850 O/C 10% and 5850s O/C 10%).

No more than 60-70%, (I'm running 70%, 67% and 62%), but it depends on the fan, some are pretty noisy)

I recommend leaving a slot open between cards, or if that's not possible the use of risers, PCIe extension cords, and/or lots of powerful external fans.  If all else fails you can drop the Memory Clock as low as it will go in MSI afterburner and even underclock the Core Clock slightly (maybe costing you 5-10% hashing power, but saving your cards and fans).  But never underestimate the ability to reduce temps possessed by high-powered external fans that are appropriately directed.

sapphire's 5850 fans seem to fail much more likely. I'm running my fans all at 95%, getting a little worried though because of all those reports here. I have to maintain those speeds because the cards are so stuffed together, getting almost 80°C on the hottest card. I bought some risers now, hope that will help. Four cards on one board just cannot safely be kept running without AC...

As for fan speed, 50-60% isn't likely to radically shorten the life of the fan. 80-100% I'd be pretty worried about.

I'm thinking 6990 fans will probably break prematurely due to mining, given that they pretty much have to be run at past 70% (or up to 100% in a home op). At 60% the temp skyrockets.

So far nothing though, but I wont be surprised when they slow down or stop spinning.

75c and under should not be an issue.

They are made to run fine at 85c even 95c. But that's for short term usage, not 24.7. I don't know of many common applications that would load the gpu at 99% 24.7 so you have to be a little conservative IMHO.
