There many available private keys storage solutions but I'm unaware of the performance of the stone book if out through heat, crush and corrosion stress test neither did I know how it looks but I am sure the data saved in the stainless steel will be lost if it went through the stress test I mention.
With that been said, Jameson Lopp has already done some test on metallic, etc private keys storage before and Quadrat register seems to be the only storage that gives a better result.

The more moving parts, the weaker these devices will be. Many of these tools have proven to fail when we actually test them.
I do not think that such a tool will result if someone uses it, and I also believe that the option to hide it without being attractive to the eyes is unthinkable.
The best option is a stone book + In my opinion, tools made of Stainless Steel are useless.

I find it unnecessary to complicate your security like this. It's time consuming + expensive + prone to user errors. I noticed their ad about the Cryptosteel Capsule and I thought it was just a stainless tube where you write your recovery phrase on a piece of paper, roll it up, and place it into the tube. I prefer aoluain's solution than this overpriced butt plug.

At first glance of the cryptosteel, I actually thought the same,
that would have made more sense! Just a HD sealed tube to
put your paper list into [i wonder if the paper would survive in
the tube subjected to high temperatures in a fire?]

 Grin Butt Plug  Grin

For start the thing is too expensive compared to other similar devices, not to mention that some clumsy instead of backup could do one big nothing. People have real trouble writing down the correct seed on a piece of paper, so I would be very careful with a backup like this.

If Ledger wanted to do something to apologize for all his failures over the past months, then he could at least share a few thousand of these devices for free- they already have our addresses and all the other information anyway...

We will be waiting, although the provide a good product in their wallets
they want our $'s at the end of the day.

It is. At that price one may buy a printer, print the seed (or parts of it by a rule) onto 100 pages and store it in various places, even rolled in small plastic bags and put into empty beer cans. There's no way on earth they will all get damaged.

But some do like to make nice presents and this can be a nice present. Not much else imho, but well, some thought they can make a business off this.

This is a great option for a couple of reasons. First of all, it is incredibly durable and simple metal plates with stamped or etched words performed the best of any device in Lopp's stress test. It is also far cheaper than any of the commercial devices. But most importantly, it is completely private. If you order any of the commercial devices, you have left your name, address, email, and phone number on a database somewhere which says "This person owns enough bitcoin/crypto to want to spend $100 to back it up on steel". As we have seen from recent database hacks and leaks, this can be incredibly dangerous. If you walk in to a hardware store and buy a $10 piece of stainless steel, you have not risked your privacy or security in any way.

Good point! we assume and hope the likes of Ledger who are in the business of SECURITY
would have proper measures in place to secure personal data Huh

Cryptosteel products are far from new. I think that they've only made a deal to use the more visible Ledger store to sell their products.
Just since the user data fiasco from Ledger's side, the timing is bad.
I'm sorry, but I would not buy from Ledger website. And why would I do that? As it was already said, it's there on Cryptosteel website too.

Absolutely, but im sure there are plenty of people buying a wallet and adding on the
Cryptosteel to the basket without doing a search, assuming this is the "official" site to buy from.

I can not even  imagine what would happen to owner of this capsule if he missed the order of letters in the slot/s. Heart attack? I would not buy the stuff like this.

Solid Cr-Mo enriched steel plate with engraved SEED phrase seems to be better choice in this respect as  the letters are fixed and can not be mixed.
Well, you'd have to be fairly absent minded or just can't be bothered if you're unwilling to check the accuracy of the seed words and/or their positions after slotting in the letters.

This seems to be a fairly elegant solution if you want it to blend in with the surroundings. Given how it looks like a regular metal tube with no external etching, it's probably quite safe from theft or at least less noticeable with a metal sheet with words etched on it.

Definitely not "new"... and it seemed to hold up fairly well in the torture test: https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/reviews/cryptosteel-capsule/
Now, I don't own one of these, but my issue with this particular device from looking at the YouTube videos of it in action is just how easily the tiles slide on and off the holder. It seems that if you were disassembling it to recover your seed phrase then all it would take is for you to accidentally knock it over, drop it, roll off the table, etc., and you could spill the tiles everywhere and face potentially irreversible loss of funds.

I use a very DIY cost effective solution myself although its not really portable.

That could be a bit of a bother, not being able to open the warped case,
cutting just above the threads would sort it. Fairly durable little product all the same.

I didnt realise that there were so many commercially available solutions for storing private keys.

€74 is definitely better than the €99 from the Ledger store.

SS plate 4mm thick with the works punched into the surface then screwed
to a roof joist facing in.

Heat and acid didn't seem to bother it much... and only a "slight" bend during the crush test. Interesting to note that the "information" inside is effectively in an unknown state (Schrödinger's Seed? Tongue) due to the reviewers inability to open the capsule after it deformed during the crush test... still you'd think a hacksaw/angle grinder and a bit of time/patience should enable you to remove the cap and hopefully extract the contents.

Perhaps you would need to cut along the tube to extract the discs if they're really jammed in after the tube was deformed like that? Huh

Also, they're cheaper on the cryptosteel store Tongue https://cryptosteel.com/product/cryptosteel-capsule-solo/?v=8e3eb2c69a18

While browsing the Ledger shop today I cam across what looks like a new product
from them. Not sure how new it is, has anyone using one?

Cryptosteel Capsule Solo

I get the benefits of it being made of Stainless Steel and being water and fire proof
but it looks a bit fiddly but I suppose you would only have to do it once!

Quote
Simply assemble your recovery phrase by sliding the first 4 letters of each word onto the core by using separators. Lock the Cryptosteel capsule and make sure to put it in a secure place to prevent it from being stolen or lost.

Here is a demo from Youtube > https://youtu.be/QikkeO0TfGY

Here are the dimensions, it should be easy to hide, would you carry it around?
