I was a huge supporter of Ledger Nano S until it stopped recognizing my wallet in Google Chrome.  Angry Angry Angry  A lot of my friends bought a Ledger Nano S on my advice and they are still running Windows 7 Professional and they are experiencing the same thing. Why should they change their OS or be forced to use Ledger's software to be able to access their coins.  Huh

Google Chrome app is outdated, and it’s not Ledger’s fault that Chrome decided to remove apps from the browser, so they nedd to made other solution. Ledger Live is not perfect, but still it is better than old Chrome app. Windows 7 has come to the end of its path, at least as far as official updates are concerned. I too used the W7 almost until the last day, but for safety's sake I no longer want to push something that is becoming old technology.

The firmware upgrade was also a nightmare, so I am slowly but surely thinking that hardware wallets are just too much of a schlep for people to use, even though it might still be one of the most secure methods to store your coins.  Sad

You should not upgrade firmware on W7, Ledger does not officially support this operating system and everything you do you do at your own risk. Upgrade on W10 takes just few minutes, but you are just swim against the water current, it's not easy and you're just making trouble for yourself.

I also do not want to spend 1000's of dollars, testing many different hardware wallets and ending up struggling with software incompatibility and having to put my friends through the stress of dealing with difficult firmware upgrades and stuff like that.  Angry

No need for this, each manufacturer clearly states what are the minimum conditions for using their devices. Firmware is something which is necessary to make from time to time, how otherwise eliminate all vulnerabilities and add some new features, and improve security?

Anyone have any other advice or tips to get the Ledger Nano S to work with Google Chrome App, because they still support it... right?

Basically Ledger devices may still work with old Chrome app, but last time I checked I can only use app that I have installed since before, and Ledger Manager was completely unusable without the ability to add and remove apps.

My advice to you and your friends is to update W7 to W10 for free, there is no need to format disc or anything like that, you can keep all programs and files intact.

I am slowly but surely leaning towards a combination of say, Electrum and loads of Paper wallets with small quantities of coins to use as a cold storage alternative.

I understand why a lot of people will not switch to Windows 10 - it is privacy nightmare and your own personal spy reporting all the time.

I agree that Windows 10 is one big spyware, but it is the successor of W7 and W8 and anyone who wants to use that OS will have to accept it sooner or later, with all its disadvantages and benefits. I think in the case of using hardware wallets and just BTC, the OS is pretty irrelevant because Electrum is superior to Ledger Live, and hardware wallets are designed to work in a relatively unsafe environment (outdated&malware infected OS).

samdan777712, my advice is to try update to W10 - some people say it is still free, and you can do it without formatting disk (but still save all important data). Or if you want to continue with W7, just format disc and install a clean copy.

There is no reason at all to use windows 7 or 8.

It is easy to have Linux now as alternative for Ledger and other wallets.

You can still upgrade for free to windows 10. Windows 7 doesn't have support anymore and it probably have a lot of security problems.

If you don't want to upgrade to windows 10, you should use linux or some other OS.

Best and safest solution you have is to install supported Linux OS on new USB stick,
and then install Ledger Live App for Linux in your OS on USB, or just use Electrum or other wallet (for example Wasabi) with your Ledger.

Can ledger nano s work with ledger live mobile app on a chrome book?> maybe i cna get the chromebook to work

Why don't you try it on your Android device?

Some users said that it's working but it's somewhat ambiguous. One of the possible alternatives is to dual boot with Linux so you can run your Ledger Live there.[1] Though you can also do this on your computer.

ETFbitcoin, it is true that Ledger officially does not support Windows 7, but in some cases, it still works with Ledger Live. I stop to using it months ago, Ledger Live is just crush if I try to connect my Nano S, but this user is upgrade firmware recently on W7.

Finally I made Ledger Nano S firmware update on my ancient Windows 7 PC few days ago. And as expected, it wasn't smooth operation
During update I got "Invalid status 6984" error on Ledger Live and my wallet was stuck on Bootloader. But on second attempt I was able to update firmware without any issues and errors. I mainly use it just for BTC, so I haven't noticed any bugs on my side so far.

Pmalek, I doubt that OS is causing OP problems, at least not directly. It is possible that something has changed in the new firmware 1.6.0, and that Shapeshift or MEW have not yet made adjustments that would allow smooth operation. I hope OP is not using Ledger Live and any other wallet in the same time, it would definitely cause connection problems.

The problem is in your Operating System.
Ledger Live is no longer compatible with Windows 7 or older OS's, just like ETFbitcoin mentioned.
But, you can still use your Ledger hardware wallet together with Electrum for Bitcoin transactions on Windows 7.
Since you mentioned MEW you probably have ETH and some erc-20 tokens. Try to abandon Windows 7, and if you want to stay with Windows go for Windows 10 if you don't want to use Linux.

It refuses to be found in any browser for anything like shapeshift or MEW. Or at least it does so inconsistently. I've gotten it to be recognized on kyberswap and some other random sites. But I had to manually select the ledger live ethereum hd derivatiion path in opera browser to get myetherwallet to recognize it and that's the only browser that worked, It wouldn't even recognize it in the desktop application of Guarda wallet. I don't get it. I can't get it to work on shapeshift in any browser, very frustrating. It's something to do with ledgerlive and windows 7 and these browsers. Ive updated firmware etc. What makes it seem weird is the inconsistency with it working on some sites and some browsers. Very confusing. I think it's related to the hd derivation path not being specified or something.
