Solved it. Turned out to be the usb cable. Used another one and then I got it started. Took me a while to get it updated and such but now it works.
Yes, sadly... not all microUSB cables are created equal... aside from the "power only" vs. "power+data" cables, the Nano S (and/or Ledger Live) seems to be quite "sensitive". I have a cable that operates quite nicely as a data cable for my Trezor ONE, but with the Nano S, it often "drops" the connection and Ledger Live won't detect the device, even though it is still powered. So, I think the cable might be slightly damaged as it is a few years old and perhaps the damage is what is causing the issue with the Nano S.

It just won't connect. There is no dirt in the USB-port and I've tried it on multiple laptops without result. The bootloader just gets stuck and doesn't seem to do anything.

I have to add it has firmware 1.1 or something so quite old. Still no asnwer from Ledger

Welcome to the club  Tongue

Can you open your ledger app and reset everything?
It is under HELP tab, and you can reset, repair and clear cache.

It is important to keep your seed words and password safe and you can restore it anytime or use other wallet.

Tried to email to Ledger but their customer service really sucks.

Worst ever lazy customer support, so don't expect to get any normal answer from them.
They look like a few guys in old dad's village garage are operating all this.

They are busy on Twiiter:

Recently wanted to look at it, but cannot get it to work with the new software. It won't update the firmware either.

What exactly is not working?

The Firmware update or connecting your hardware wallet with the "new software" (are you referring to Ledger Live?) ?

In addition to what BitMaxz said, make sure you use a data cable (e.g. the one included with the nano), not a charging cable.
Does your computer recognize a new device has been attached? What OS are you using? Please be more specific.

What error do you get while trying to update the firmware?

Can you run the Ledger live as administrator then update again.

If not check the device Ledger Nano it might be a connection issue check cable if it's working well also check the USB socket/connector there might some dirt inside that you need to clean with a brush and thinner(If you don't have a thinner you can use alcohol.).

After you clean the USB socket and the cable try to update it again.

Also, read the guide carefully how to update this ledger from here https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002731113-Update-Ledger-Nano-S-firmware

Ok, the following: I purchased a Ledger Nano S wallet to store my coins. Haven't touched this in nearly 2 years as the value has gone down quite a lot. Recently wanted to look at it, but cannot get it to work with the new software. It won't update the firmware either.

Tried to email to Ledger but their customer service really sucks.

Any solution to this?
