From someone who's looking to purchase a ledger, what's the reason on the number of apps that can be loaded at once? Is it limited internal storage?
In a word, yes

Best to think of it as multiple "apps" on your ledger...

You add and/or remove them using the Ledger Manager:

The Ledger Nano S is somewhat space limited and you can only have 4 or 5 "apps" loaded at once, however you don't "lose" anything if you uninstall one of the apps and then reinstall it... UNLESS you reset the device... All the "apps" use the same seed as the base for creating their addresses etc... so you can uninstall the BTC one, install LTC, send/receive LTCs, then uninstall LTC and reinstall BTC and continue from where you left off...

It can be a bit of a nuisance if you use a LOT of different supported coins... but it isn't impossible.

I think I'm right in saying it can hold five at the most.

If you run out of space and have to remove one, you're not going to lose anything. You'll just lose the ability to access it. If you want to swap coins uninstall one of the others, reinstall and then whatever you need will be accessible again.

Yeah, the biggest thing is making sure you keep your private keys (mnemonic keys, etc.) safe... then you will always be able to access your coins later on down the road if you switch wallets on your ledger or can pull them up on another device

My nano S says it supports BTC, ETH and XRP (amongst a handful of other things) and there are seperate apps in Chrome for the various wallets.

Question is, can a single device support multiple wallets simultaneously? IE can I load balances of all three of those types onto it at once? Or if I load one will it replace (and therefore me lose) anything that was put on previously?

Serious question!!
