a simple to avoid this is if you buy a Ledger from a third party, reset it. this will force the device to issue a new PIN and word phrase group. the instructions are on the Ledger site. if you don't change them the previous owner will have a record of all your private keys.

Just read about someone that was scammed for 35k from a ledger Nano s bought from eBay. The ledger had already been set up and the seller made a legit looking scratch card with the 24 recovery phrase on it, subsequently logged in and stole his funds.

I bought myn on Amazon, I am right in assuming that the 24 word phrase can only be viewed once. When I set myn up I was given the words in order which I have stored in a safe place. Myn can be compromised can it as i was given the word combination on set up?
This news has been spread and became popular, the re-seller is totally messing up with his business. I have seen that post on reddit and someone from ledger company (I can't remember if that's the CEO), will help him out to recover that fund.

They'll file case and sue that ebay re-seller, the point is he didn't started out from scratch to operate his own nano ledger s that will generate new recovery words.

He's too comfortable that it's already written out thinking that it's safe (which is true about nano ledger S), it is safe but what the re-seller did is intentional.

For those nano ledger S users, you don't have to worry if you're the one that operated it for the first time and written down those recovery words.

The lesson here is order directly from ledgerwallet.com

So the seller on ebay compromised the nano ledger s.  However, did that person reset the nano ledger s when he first got it?  I was reading reviews on amazon about this and many people mentioned how it looked like it has been used etc.

However, even if its been used or tampered with... i thought as long as you reset it and get a new 24 word phrase, that is fine?  Or is that not?

Because this is very bothersome as buying it on amazon would be dangerous.

Doesn't matters how it looked or was it tampered. A buyer should take care things for his own safety. What seller did was that he sold the wallet with mnemonic passphrase that he can access also. However the interesting thing is that buyer didn't researched a little bit on ledger wallet technical things and ended up losing his money.

There is a support post already in ledger wallet's zendesk advising things to do after buying a second-hand ledger wallet: https://ledger.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161645-How-to-erase-my-wallet-or-reset-my-Nano-S-

Every electronic device could be flashed and compromised. My guess is that exactly this happened here. Somebody flashes the Ledger with corrupted seed.

Nobody should ever buy any wallet from other place than original producers.

That isn’t what happened, the ledger was already set up and the seller made up a scratch card containing the 24 word phrase.

If the ledger is tampered with it won’t work as there is a test every time it connects, the hacker would need to know the privacy key

Can anyone put my mind at rest here? I set it up as a new device and was given the 24 words on the ledger itself. Does this mean I am safe?

Always try to buy your hardware wallet from the manufacturer.
But if you set it up as a new device and it generates our 24 words it should be secure  Smiley

should be more careful in every purchase of goods, especially wallet-shaped hardware
because the wallet holds our money, so make sure beforehand that some components or parameters to access our money ... safe, so that events like this do not happen

I did consider looking at Ebay but then thought that it is too open for things like this, always best to go direct to the site as then you know you are purchasing a brand new untouched product even if it does cost a few extra $.

It's very risky buying hardware wallets from suspisious sellers, but the thing is Nano ledger currently is out of stock on the official site so you can buy it only pre-ordered with a two month delay.People dont want to wait for a long time and this is the reason why they do such stupid things.

That is really unresponsible to try to save $5-10 on your money safety. He could have bought it on the main Ledger site without any troubles and stay safe

I believe I got mine off Amazon to. I haven't had any issues. Have anymore info on the seller on Ebay or the link? We need to get the news out there for everyone so know one else buys from him and hopefully get this guy shut down.
