API is a Must. Thanks for any hints!
Already one of our community member has given you brief information about multiple wallets. I hope you will be able to find the best one from there.

if you are new with crypto then you can continue with Coinbase. Their wallet and API both service is quite good and reliable. You can easily use their API for sending and receiving funds from other wallets. They support most common altcoins on their platform.

You can take a look here for the full list; Supported digital currencies on Coinbase

Not sure what you want the API access for.

Have you tried checking out trust wallet?
https://trustwallet.com

It supporsts
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum and ERC20 tokens
- Binance coin and BEP2 tokens
- Litecoin
- Bitcoin Cash
- Dash
- Stellar
- Tron
- Zcash
- XRP

The only API access i saw related to it is Blockatlas, a Clean and lightweight cross-chain transaction API

Is there a light crypto wallet that
- supports top 5-10 cryptocurrencies, and
- allows API access?

API is a Must. Thanks for any hints!

Multicurrency (with 5-10 "top" currencies) and MUST have API? Then you're probably looking at having to leverage the functionality and custodial wallets of exchanges... I don't think that there are any desktop wallets (or "web" wallets for that matter) that will provide the functionality you're wanting.

What exactly are you wanting to do? create a trading platform or something? Huh

If you are talking about SPV wallets with Bitcoin support you can blindly go with Electrum. Electrum does support API features and here is the documentation for how to use them : https://electrumx.readthedocs.io/en/latest/protocol-methods.html. I don't really prefer people using Web wallets or hot wallets for a longer period. But they are the one's that support API integration with wallets and also help us in receiving transactions and setting up passwords for the wallet with a multi currency support. There are individual wallets like Blockchain.com  which supports their native currency such as Bitcoin. For multi-currency wallets which has the API control, you could go with

  • Coinbase - Supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and some of the major altcoins. Many of the developers rely upon Coinbase for API. (I would trust upon this with my money)
  • Bitpay - One of the major popular services centered in Atlanta and they do support Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash (Scam Cash) Cheesy
  • BlockCypher - (I won't be personally supporting for any of these web based wallet services) which does support some of the major currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin etc.
  • Xapo - Wallet and API provider which can be trusted upon.
  • Coinomi - I believe coinomi do have API for development activities and they also support 10+ currencies right at the moment
