A proper LN node is recommended, yeah, but it does require some maintenance at times. Some people like to use Blink/Wallet of Satoshi/etc, so they don't need to deal with the upkeep, but that does mean you are sharing a node.Maybe I should run a proper node instead...

Evidently electrum lightning requests allow for a on-chain fallback, so you may be able to participate without lightning as well (although fees might not make sense)
