As a separate point, does anyone know if sMerit can be gained thorugh activity increasing? E.G, every 14 activity you get a merit or is it just when you get merits that you get a 50% sMerit?

Nope, no "free" sMerit other than what we all got initially. You can only get sMerit if someone sends you merit (0.5 sMerit per merit received), or if you're a merit source yourself (fixed amount per month).

If I understand the system correctly you only get sMerit when you receive merits.
E.g. if you would have spent all your sMerit as of now you wouldn´t get a single sMerit again if you never
receive a merit or are promoted to being a merit source.

I found this quote slightly disturbing - it would tend to imply that others who are not merit sources are allowed to sell their merits. That rather kills the whole concept.
That's logically unsound.

P = if you are a merit source you are not allowed to sell your merits.
¬P ≠ if you are not a merit source you are allowed to sell your merits.

Just because merit sources are not allowed to sell their merits does not mean that non-sources are.

It's probably a given that ALL moderators and staff members are merit sources. Along with other people the Theymos or those said moderators (or cyrus) know to be good posters and good assessors of the quality of posts also.

Quote
"You are a merit source. The next XXX merit you spend will come from your source rather than your sMerit balance. Merit spent from your source will come back in 30 days. Unused source merit is wasted. It is not allowed for merit sources to sell their merit."

I found this quote slightly disturbing - it would tend to imply that others who are not merit sources are allowed to sell their merits. That rather kills the whole concept.

I agree there should be a complete ban on everyone selling/buying merit and everyone found to have done it should face some sort of ban as a result (and not be able to use any more merits).

Actually all you have to do is look at this page to get a pretty good idea of who the merit sources are.
Perhaps in a few weeks or so, but I don't think this is the case currently.
Definitely not just yet.

All Legendary members got 200 or fewer, plus 50% of received Merits. And, at the moment, no one has sent more than 200 sMerit, so no body needs to be a source to be there.
In months, it will be possible to see who has sent more than 50% of the received merits, plus the initial amount. It would be a hard work, definitely not worth it  Cheesy

This is fairly simple. All you have to do is review many people’s merit page to see who has given out a lot of merit and then review their merit page to confirm they in fact have given more merit then they otherwise would be able to without being a merit source.

It will probably will not be evident for at least several weeks to a month or so who merit sources are.

Please excuse me if this has already been posted. Could the community and/or those who know compile a list of users that are merit sources?

I'm interested in getting to know the system some more. Thanks!

I do not think that it will be right to disclose their names here. They will get troubled with pms asking for merits.

OK, I'm starting to understand this system. It looks as if I got 83 sMerit credits somehow, and I have just given 5 to Theymos. ( I'm a grovelling pig Smiley ). Actually it was for a WiFi thread in the Ivory Tower, and it was  a really helpful set of suggestions for me. I suspect that this use of the system may be part of the planned improvements. Giving merits to posters making generalised replies in the spam threads will not help to improve quality. Giving away sMerits hasn't affected my personal holding, so I can see it is a way for those of us with specialist interests to reward helpful and informative replies in our threads.

How does one know if he/she is a merit source?
It will say so on your merit page:
For me (and other sources), it is. My merit page reads
"You are a merit source. The next XXX merit you spend will come from your source rather than your sMerit balance. Merit spent from your source will come back in 30 days. Unused source merit is wasted. It is not allowed for merit sources to sell their merit."

theymos stated he didn't want to make the list public so that users don't get harassed for merits.

I'm confused. How does one know if he/she is a merit source? As far as i understand, everyone who currently has merit, is able to give out a part of his merit in the form of sMerit. I for example have 94sMerit, does this make me a "source"?

Or do sources have unlimited amounts of sMerit to give out, as opposed to 'only' my 94?

Wording on their merit page is slightly different so you'd know for sure if you are one. It's not quite unlimited, they get a fixed amount each month.

Theymos stated that the sources can make a limited amount of merit every month, without having to receive it from other users, that's probably why they'll be giving it to trusted users and not random newbies.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source).

I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.
