What would likes bring other than a popularity competition? I do not really care whether someone agrees with a post or not. This is not facebook and I do not see any reason why this would benefit the forum other than adding a useless gimic to the forum that would have no real meaning.

Everything on this forum currently has a function. The merit system is for identifying quality posts and allowing people to rank up. The trust system was introduced to identify good traders and bad traders.

The like system does not bring any real function to the forum. Its something which requires a little coding because theymos does not seem to be a person who just installs smf mods and rathers a customized approach.

The other suggestions are generally good.

dogs are cute.
#1: Honestly very few people care about this forum, and caring about the age of the board, they don't care. Some people don't even know that satoshi created this forum, hell some people don't even know satoshi is or who created bitcoin Wink.

#2: Great idea. I usually use my phone a lot, so yeah I would love to have that feature.

#3: Not bad, it could be a great addition.

#4: The profiles would start looking weird(?), because everyone would have different details filled in.

#5: Could possibly be good, I don't mind if it is there or not there.

#6: Probably not. The merit distribution has been going down in numbers, and the like system would ruin it. Its not everybody's cup of tea to post High quality posts.
Overall nice suggestions, a few of them could be added I suppose, unless they are complicated to add, or if they clutter the UI.

I think the version we are using currently is too different from the original up to date version of SMF currently they have. Simply installing the new mods may create a total mess.
That's correct. The links I provided, only serve as a reference (that's why I posted the following):

  • Few of the suggestions, aren't compatible with the SMF version that we use (1.1.19) but I'm sure we can work something out.

if we had a like button it'd be confusing and also would detract from the importance of the merit system
Shouldn't be (it's meant for two different things + they're not located right next to each other):

Like button = Post you like or agree with (no connection to ranking up).
Merit button = High quality posts.

Also, from looking at Youtube videos recently, it appears that people hit the like button indiscriminately to the point where I don't even look at how many likes a comment has.
You have a point and I also don't care about the number of likes and such but the issue is, these two things (merits & likes) should be separated (I do know that such things are subjective but I've seen many users that merit posts, simply because they agree with it).

I like #5.
If it works and people really use it, there might be no need for #6 as I think more merits will be given because of it.
But the issue isn't the lack of merits (it's the opposite).

You won't have to browse through so many threads (and posts) in order to find good stuff. Quality will be easier to detect.

I'm kinda meh on most of these, but as for #6, I used to think having a "like" function would be useful but now I think it'd be silly.  While certainly not all decent posts deserve merit (or at least there's not enough merit to go around), if we had a like button it'd be confusing and also would detract from the importance of the merit system.

Also, from looking at Youtube videos recently, it appears that people hit the like button indiscriminately to the point where I don't even look at how many likes a comment has.  My brain has just become burned out on likes, and I don't think it'd be a good feature here.  When you don't have a limit on the number of likes you can give, the number becomes meaningless--that's why the merit system is so novel.

Take note of the following:
  • Few of the suggestions, aren't compatible with the SMF version that we use (1.1.19) but I'm sure we can work something out.
  • I've seen few other users making similar suggestions (few on the list).
  • Don't forget to click on each link (in order to see the pictures/samples).

#1 Forum Epoch

The Forum Epoch will allow you to view the exact date of birth of your forum and the age of the board.

#2 Move Edited Time - While browsing the forum using a cellphone/tablet (android), I can't see the edited time (this mod, solves the issue).

Edited Time Next To Posted Time

#3 FixCopy - Something similar to this but instead of adding the site link, should add the URL of the post (useful when it comes to finding bots that copy/paste using the inside sources).

The FixCopy mod adds your site link at the end of anything copied from your site.

#4 Hide Unused Profile Display Fields

Hides unused profile information on profile display.

#5 Ignore Topics - Previously suggested by "tinus42" (I do know the "Ignore Boards Preferences").

Adds the ability to ignore individual topics for the purposes of RecentPosts/Recent/UnreadReplies/Unread sections of SMF.

#6 Like Posts - Previously suggested by "Vod" (a lot of posts deserve likes, but only few of them deserve merits).

This mod provides and interface to like/unlike posts.
