The p2p port in Litecoin is 9333.

If you want more then 8 connections, that port will need to be open all the way through your local firewall and any  routers between you and your ISP connection.

However, I am of the opinion that opening a pinhole in your firewalls will result in little gain with a larger risk.

How fast your mining software detects new blocks (without longpoll or the newer protocols (stratum and GBT)) is really more a matter of luck. Your mining software will check  for a new block at a certain interval and if the block changes at the beginning of that interval, your miner will hash the stale until the interval is up. Having more than 8 connections to your client-deamon is not going to change that.

If you really want efficiency, set up a private pool on your local network and you can then use longpoll. Longpoll will tell your mining software when a new block is on the network, instead of the mining software depending strictly on checking for new blocks on a set interval. The mining software will still check for blocks at a certain interval as a backup in case the longpoll fails.

I have read the number is 1% - 3% getwork vs. longpoll, so you will have to decide if it is worth the effort to set up a private pool.

Added: CGminer will use an outside pools' longpoll if the pool is in its list of pools. Make your local client-daemon pool 0 and set pool 1 to an outside litecoin pool.

I do not believe reaper or any of the CPU miners have this ability.

If you are sitting behind a router that would likely be why. You need to open ports on your router.

They are forwarded, CanYouSeeMe.org proves that.

If you sit behind a router and certain ports aren't open on that router, you will get a max of 8 connections. For the life of me I can't remember which ports to open.

Can someone else speak on this?

Is it possible to get more then 8 active connections on Litecoin-qt?  I checked 9333 at CanYouSeeMe.org and it is being forwarded.  I have tried with Map port using UPnP on and off and all I ever get is 8 active connections. The reason I ask is I'm solo mining and if I find a block I want it on the network as soon as I can.
