I agree with the previous comment about the importance of quality backlinks.
Backlinks are an important part of improving website SEO ranks, but much before you must do many things to optimize your pages for search engines.
I tested your site briefly and you have quite a number of issue that hinder a better ranking. You have to fix it first because no backlink will make it up to you.
Some of them:

mk4 is correct. Its not the quantity of back links that get the site ranked higher, Its the quality. If you get 10,000 back links from random websites that aren't related to your niche, Google isn't going to like that. If you were to get a few from a highly focused niche related to your website then your much more likely to be helped with Google ranking or any search engine for that matter.

One way of doing it is; guess posts like mk4 mentioned. This is probably the most cost effective, and safest ways to do it. Google is incredibly strict with its ranking algorithm, and its constantly evolving. So, when considering your targets, its better to have a lesser popular site, that is highly focused to your niche, than to have a very popular website that has nothing to do with your niche.

You should be considering your site's future SEO as well. If buying low quality links work currently, will they work if Google decide to do a reform? obviously, there's no guarantee here, but its more likely you'll have success with handpicked guest posts, than dubious links from random websites.

It makes sense too. Google is a search engine, so it is generally trying to link things together, and suggest things to its users based on their preferences. So, it makes sense to only get links from niche specific websites, since that's more appealing to Google, because its more appealing to its users. 

The way to do this is to either create quality blog posts on your site itself, or pay for guest posts on authority sites and link to your site. Trust me when I say that using link exchanges isn't going to get you much anywhere.

In most cases, even page 2-3 is really bad.

Google has been penalizing these practices for almost a decade.

Yeah, of course, if you have ten thousand backlinks in your BL profile it won't slap you. But if you have 500 BL and 10% of the links are vice versa, it's another story...

Besides, who wants to have a backlink from a page that contains a hundred of them? Nobody...
There was a time when you could easily find link exchange sites that flourished on the web. But now that Google doesn't like it so much...

You are going to need to place several dozen backlinks pointing back to your site if you want it to rank on page 1 on google. In my experience, almost nobody browses past the 20 results on the first page. My sample size is small but for one particular page, I have 7 impressions and 1 click.
