cryptocurrencies is the umbrella term for all cryptographic based currencies, thus including bitcoin.
then beneath that it separates into bitcoin litecoin and namecoin (the three main first gen) and altcoins, where most the other cheap pump and dump altcoins exist which have atleast 50% code copied from the first gen.

Personally, I would include litecoin and namecoin under the altcoin category, but I recognize that a significant number of people feel that those two stand on their own regardless of how much they are based on Bitcoin and don't consider them to be altcoins.

I Believe litecoin is significantly and deliberately different in bitcoin and was before the phase of hobbyist coin cloning, thus i consider litecoin part of the first gen grouping. the same goes for namecoin. but altcoins are mainly clones with minor tweaks and not really any intellectual reasoning for it.
there may be new coins in the future where the code and purpose is so unique they themselves join the first gen group in the future, but my aim was to describe the 'hierachy' of currency more so that what group certain elements belong into.

@billbags, i am fully open to sharing anything i put out into the community so dont feel its plagiarism. but atleast try to style my image better as it was just a 2 minute job to make the point. here maybe a better version to help peoples understanding

I was striving to reach newbies, perhaps a bit older, a bit more traditional leaning, and maybe a bit more in step with a design and layout that I've featured here. I believe that as they approach my website, with a sense of curiosity and skepticism, the bells and whistles style might just deter them, and scare them off.  After all, cryptos are not widely known, and/or accepted by mainstream society.

I respect your ability to take criticism well which will benefit you greatly in the future. You are breaking some design principles which affect usability and readability for humans in general despite the demographic you are targeting. I almost thought it was done deliberately at first to illicit a sense of nostalgia.

Here is an old resource that has some healthy advice :

be aware that things like ripple, is not in the cryptocurrency category at all as its just a mysql database. just like facebook credits, world of warcraft gold, applepay, paypal. these are all part of their own categories

and then... digital currency encapsulates them all..

so going from biggest embrella to lowest entity it should look like this

Thank you Franky, I've been missing that outlook....I may plagiarize that chart in the future Grin

And since I do web design and graphics art work, and was looking all this up (I found it fascinating) anyway, I figured I could make a guide that new people could use to understand cryptos better.

I apologize for this moment of brutal honesty, please interpret it in good spirits and solidarity.

I don't know whether to congratulate or criticize your efforts as you have created a site so monumentally ugly that it is paradoxically beautiful as it illicits a sense of nostalgia to an earlier time.

I was reminded of this treasure from back in the day when I clicked on your link:

Ouch...lol. Thanks for your brutal honesty. I wanted critiques with the feedback, and although it stings, I really appreciate it. Here's the thing: members here are not really my target audience. Forumers tend to be young, snarky, a bit jaded, with a (perhaps) exaggerated sense of self - import. You/they probably favor the most modern looking, lights and sirens type glitterazzi that is found in abundance on the various faucet/gambling websites.

So while your unvarnished critique hits a creative nerve...in a way, it confirms that I've perhaps struck the right ambiance for my target visitor....if that makes any sense.

Again, thanks a lot for taking the time to check out the site, and post here. It is appreciated.

Thank you for that terse, concise, and informative hierarchy. It is appreciated, especially since I am quite new to the digital currencies world myself.

@ D.H.
I see it in his personal quote,  but not in the white paper, I have a lot of respect of your opinions/views. So I'll leave it at that. Thanks.

"The first decentralized cryptocurrency to be created was bitcoin in 2009." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptocurrency

I took this to mean that Bitcoins is a cryptocurrency. If this information is erroneous, I will certainly amend it. Thanks again.

No, you got it correct the first time. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency.

And I would even amplify what Franky1 said above - trying to explain anything about mining to newbies is a fools' errand that can only end in confusion and heartbreak.

Thank you for both points.

I agree, and after the feedback I've received so far, I will definitely be addressing the mining issue. When I started the project, mining was more viable than it is now. Thanks again for all the feedback so far guys.

I don't see "Cryptocurrency" mentioned in the Bitcoin White Paper

The word "cryptocurrency" wasn't yet in common use when Mr. Nakamoto wrote the white paper, but Bitcoin is most certainly a cryptocurrency.

The white paper does state:

Announcing version 0.3 of Bitcoin, the P2P cryptocurrency!

Your site looks like something from the 90's

Thanks, the '90s were a pretty great decade.  Cheesy

Hi everyone;

I was asked to look into Bitcoins for a family member who was interested in investing money in it. I did, and found that there wasn't a really good website with all the information together that was easy to understand for a newbie to cryptos.

And since I do web design and graphics art work, and was looking all this up (I found it fascinating) anyway, I figured I could make a guide that new people could use to understand cryptos better.

I also want to make a pdf version (but I'm still tweaking the wording right now), that people can print out and share with people they meet.

So, if you guys would please review the site, and let me know your thoughts on it, I would really appreciate it. Anything you think should be added or changed, feel free to let me know. Otherwise, if you think it might help someone, send the link to them.

Here's the address:

http://www.makingmoneyhoney.com

It has a guide, news, twitter feed, and a large faucet section.

Crypto's refers to altcoins....Bitcoin refers to Bitcoin....I'd probably start with that.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciated it. Part of the challenge is that I'm kind of new to it and I rely on reference material.

too much emphasis on mining.
especially talking about solo mining and gpu mining..

its as if your making a guide about gold and talking about pickaxes.

even if you reply that your meant the solo-gpu mining in terms of altcoins, even that is getting out dated, so write about it in terms of ASICS ONLY as too many people think they cam make $2 using $1 electric from a day on a laptop/desktop PC, where infact its not profitable to make any coin with just a computers singular GPU anymore

Thanks the feedback, this is the kind of thing I am interested in.

I've been working on it for a while, its still a work in progress. I'm thinking of adding a disclaimer on the mining section, as far as being a bit outdated...and emphasizing ASICS.
