Redsun: The problem you're running into is that Paypal is really terrible. Large stores like Amazon can live with the terribleness because they're rich enough to absorb a few chargebacks and big enough to prosecute fraud internationally. Most people here don't have those advantages.

See if your bank does ACH direct deposit to other accounts---that's a bit more reliable.

If a scammer uses a stolen PayPal account to make a payment, I'm pretty sure the account owner can report the payment as unauthorized and get it reversed regardless of the payment method.

Or perhaps a scammer links a PayPal account they create to someone else's bank account or credit card and the account owner reverses the transaction.

Or perhaps they just call PayPal with a story like "My kid made this transaction when I was away from the computer" and get away with it.

The Bitcoin community has seen a lot of PayPal-based scamming in the past.

I read through the legal stuff at the paypal site. From what I can tell, buyers are not eligible for "purchase protection," aka paypal dispute resolution, aka chargebacks, when purchasing bitcoin. It seems to me that bitcoin falls under the "intangible items," the "items equivelant to cash," or the "personal payments" categories. When using "personal payments" the seller has to chose the "personal" tab.

Speaking to the buyer: "PayPal will generally not find in your favor if you escalate a Dispute to a Claim for an item which is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection."

Reference:

Paypal User Agreement, 13.3.

Based on what I've read on these forums, Paypal is a no go for sellers, but based on what I read at the paypal site, I'm not sure why that is. If sellers choose the 'personal payments" option, aren't they protected? Does paypal not enforce it's own rules?

How safe are amazon gift cards? Can the sender "chargeback" a gift card (eg, use the code before I do, or otherwise steal it)?

If gift cards are safe, I'd sell you 50 BTC for an amazon gc. I'd want to use clearcoin.

Ah, then good luck.

Without trust, it is hard to find a seller because of the risk of chargebacks.

I can do this via check by mail, potentially for a cheaper price as well.
