The description is on the address, not the transaction, so the current MultiBit only keeps the last label per address.
We are going to change this in MultiBit HD to have the description per transaction as, as you point out, this is more useful.

The descriptions I add to transactions keep on getting lost.
It only preserves the most recent description. I am running latest version 5.15.
