Ok I am done syncing and I do see the transaction, as of right now my balance is 7.3 BTC and my unconfirmed is .014 BTC. However the deposit for 4BTC does show 267 confirmations with a green check next to it. I guess I am not really sure what my unconfirmed balance means.

Those are from transactions that have not yet made it into a block.  Depending on the source of the transaction, it is possible that it will never make it into a block.  Without more details (such as the bitcoin address or transactionID) that's about as much as I can tell you about them.

If you are still syncing, and it looks like it's going to take a long time, then you could benefit from trying out the new 0.8 test client. It syncs a lot faster than the 0.7 client did on my computer.

I used the  bitcoin-qt client for OSX. I transfered 4BTC into my wallet and soon after I did a backup. Then I encrypted the wallet, after the encryption the coins were gone. I tried reverting to the backup and they aren't there either. Should I kiss my 4BTC goodbye or is there something I can do to get them back?

Thanks!

Chances are you are still happily downloading the blocks, it is "syncing" right?

Gabi is most likely correct.

1) When you view the "Receive coins" tab in the client, do you still see the address listed there that you sent the 4 BTC to?

2) Have you ever sent any of those 4 BTC (even as little as 0.00000001 BTC) from that client to anywhere at all?

If the answer to the first question is "Yes" and the answer to the second question is "No", then you probably jsut have to wait for it to finish synchronizing with the bitcoin network (depending on your computer this could take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks).

If either the answer to the first question is "No" or the second question is "Yes", then there could be other issues that you might need some assistance with.

Check your transactions to see if it actually made it into the wallet.
