I recommend you going with Electrum another time, this time make sure to remember the SEED as for the password is not very important, you can always restore your wallet from the SEED even if you have lost the password. Electrum supports greatly the cold storage, since you are not such a tech person this guide will help you a lot.

Have a remember-able passphrase this time when you make a wallet, then go for paper wallets.
This is the safest method with which you can have your coins with yourself without any fear.

Hello,

I posted about a year ago about how I bought 0.7btc and forgotten all my Electrum details (seed/password etc).

I tried to forget about it and move on but its always niggled away at me so last week I bought another 0.7 btc. This time I've written everything down and saved it but I'd like to out 0.5btc in cold storage, lock it away in my safe with my passport and other valuables  Cheesy

I'm a complete newbie with the technology and don't want to lose them again so can anybody explain to me how I'd go about saving 0.5btc in cold storage - is it even a good idea?

I've just became a father for the first time (4 weeks ago) and I like to daydream that maybe in the future that 0.5btc will help my daughter late on in life  Smiley

Thanks!
You must save all details of your wallet from passwords to pass phrases,, in order to open it even if you didnt opened it for a long time.
Save all the details in a notepad and save it your pc

if you very hard to remember password, i prefered you use bitcoin paper wallet, it's very safe because offline mode, no need internet connection also low space, you can save it anywhere (safe place.)

Good for you, to climb back on the horse after you have been thrown off..... many other people have made similar mistakes before and they turned against Bitcoin and even turned shill. Your best bet

would be to go to bitaddress.org and to generate some paper wallets offline. There are some guides on this forum and on Youtube to do this securely, so just follow those instructions and push it all

into paper wallets, until that kid is big enough to go to University and have it all paid, by her fathers good investment years ago.  Grin Grin Grin

Now that sounds like a much better idea. Write everything down friend ! Not just for btc bit every business venture you take. I think saving half a coin in cold storage is an excellent idea for your child. Keep adding to it. Trust me when it comes to kids you will pat yourself on the back for it in the future. Good to see you saving from an early stage. Dont be like some people that stress about money when their child grows up and needs text books and extra lessons and eventually collage funds. Good luck .

I think it is good to hold it or put it on a safe wallet .. someday it will be a big worth for sure

To grab a good profit, its the right time to hold as the ongoing price increase is continuing. Also buying is recommended because on a day or two one can easily make a twenty dollar just by holding.

I recommend that for cold storage you use a paper wallet.

You can download the code to bitaddress.org at https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org. Bitaddress is a popular, secure, and trusted generator of paper wallets.

Take the code you downloaded to an offline computer. Then open the bitaddress.org.html file in your web browser. Then generate a new address in the browser and choose the option for a paper wallet. Generate one address and choose the option to BIP38 Encrypt. Enter a password for the encryption. This password will protect the Bitcoin if someone steals the paper wallet. Then you can print out that paper wallet and send your 0.5 BTC to the address listed on that paper wallet. Store the paper wallet in a safe place until you need to access those Bitcoin again.

Also make sure computer is secure as-well is a huge part of making cold storage/paper wallet.   Make sure to have anti-virus/anti-malware and updated and ran.   Depending on your level of comfert you might even install a new OS update it, add the security programs, and wipe it after so you can feel very secure.   When taking the time to do it might make a few paper wallets due to time and that way you have some ready to go and empty if you want another.

I also like to clear cache of printer.   Make sure it is not stored depending on how new/nice of printer some have a cache that stores.   Kinda depends on how much you are storing but I'm always very safe in my mind when I make a paper wallet.

Damn, that really sucks to have lost 0.7 BTC. Well, you've learned a lesson. Keep your bitcoins safe before you start getting concerned about what you should do with your bitcoins.

I suggest you keep it in a physical wallet, perhaps in paper form. That's the safest way.

Damn dude, that really sucks to have lost 0.7 BTC. That is some serious cash for anyone. Although it could be a lot worse, but it is still a substantial sum to lose in any case.

I think it is good that you're holding your bitcoins for the future. Most people don't realise that.

You should follow what knightdk said, that's very good way to safe your coins for long term, with low cost too, but still secure, just my suggestion, laminate your paper wallet, protect it from bad weather and keep it to safe place.

Yeah it will be worth in the future if you just hold it.. i think you can also save your bitcoins in bitcoin core but it takes a lot of time to install because of syncing the whole block.. and i think only cold storage is the best to save it for a long time.. just always make a back copy for privates keys.. save it in your drive d if you have.. just remember don't save it to usb drive or MMC because those things are can be damage even you are not using it..

Im sure it will, best by me is to print paper wallet, put coins on it and as u did put it in safe.
Purest and simplest method for non-tech people.
