Airdrop is one of the steps to do the marketing campaign for ICO project. When they do the Airdrop they will require some information from you such as:
Mew wallet
Facebook account
Twiter account
Telegram account
Like/tweet their fan page.
Sharing their profile on facebook/twitter.

Then they will have a community with thousands of ppl - it will make your ICO rank going up.

Sure, but these airdropped tokens will be dumped on ICO investors later dropping the token price below ICO price
Some of them to the moon, you can check the Polymath's project. The investors even got $2000 from selling the free token without doing anything.

this is a good move to promote your project, although the bounty company is much more effective, you get an air drop and tell about it all around, they also get and tell, so as the popularity of the project appears

I see a lot of airdrops running here and there.
Why would people launch them? They pay gas for creating a contract and then pay gas to transfer tokens for free. So I guess there must be a reason and a hope for a return on these investments.

It is why a token is worth nothing if the project does not success.
it is why i limite for WSPU2 the "airdroped" token.
I only offer free token if they are financed.

The air drop is a great way to advertise for a new product, people want to get your tokens free, they tell you about their friends and acquaintances, the information spreads far away, and when you want to see a lot of people on the stock exchange

this is an excellent advertising company for a new project you give them your contact information, and they can send you a reward, then they can write you letters and offer their project, and you can tell a successful project to your friends,

Airdrops are good but once they didnt get the attention that they wanted ,the project will become worthless and devs will gonna leave the project.

even though the airdrop is succesful and they manage to get the attention that theyve deserve , there is also a posibility that the project will turn into a scam because they intented it to be a scam and only wants to get a profit from their investors. the reason why there are lots of airdrops is because there are a lot of coins and ico's. they only do airdrop because they wanted to get their coins to be discovered by other people.

You cant stop those projects to have airdrops since this is one of the ways on how to distribute their tokens. They would really allocate funds for them to distribute free tokens among to those airdrop participants. They are not just giving it for free but at the same time it do have a motive on might getting an investor too. When you try to see those airdrops most of them do end up on failing because most investors do see these coins as craps and only few can really able to succeed.

Today most of the airdrops are scammed, which unlike before they are airdropping to promote and have exposure on their product and technology.
But today so many airdrops are offered but in the end they turn out to be worthless coin as there is no actual product involve or the team members abandoned the project.

I advise to be careful on what you participate.

Why would I be careful? It's not like I'm giving away any money for airdropped tokens.
It just perplexes me how people are making money with airdrops. If most airdrop tokens end up being worthless airdrop developers are left with nothing (even less then nothing since they have to pay for gas).

Some kind of PR here.
You join their social network: twitter, FB, telegram, reddit, discord and all. Then you have to retweet, tweet about their airdrop with hashtag,...like that. Don't forget the refferal program. And you know what, most of the token is not for airdrop, it's like 10-15% of the supply, the person join almost their bounty will get like 40% of it. Then ICO happened. If their token was list on market, and you will want to buy more the token. Then you hold on to the token, wait for it making some miracle.
That's what i see

Why would people launch them?
Marketing, attracting other investors and giving their project attention that they want.
If there is no airdrop then they have to pay for other advertising cost.
But if the project doesn't gathered that much fund during the ICO then that airdrop is worthless.

Devs do airdrops before/after ICO? I'd guess ICO investors are not going to be happy about that as airdropped tokens would be dumped below ICO price as soon as the token is listed on an exchange.
If there is a dump that will happen it will surely not that significant because airdrops normally has so many participants and the share they will receive from the allocated budget on airdrop will be too small that no one can control the price in the exchange.

If that is the case why would participants bother at all about this token? I mean the whole point of doing an airdrop, as I see it, is to attract as much users as possible that are going to be willing to shill that token all over the place in hopes for it to get a higher price in future. If each participant has a very small share of a token he/she just has no incentive to bother about this token at all.

Not only that, but smart users would hold onto the coin for a little bit just to make significant money, instead of selling 1000 shares at say, 50 cents a share.
I participated in one ICO, and although they did not do an airdorp, the price has already allowed me to over triple my money in the few weeks since the launch. There's significant gains to holding onto coins after an ICO is complete and you can exchange the tokens, instead of selling immediately.

Everything is about marketing and user base - every project wants as many people as possible, because only people can use their coin and this brings value to this coin Wink.

Many projects are trying to accumulate huge user base through those airdrops.

It's cheap for them (sending tokens with 2 gas in 1-2c) and they are getting the user attention by this.

They are doing it before the ICO and they are distributing those free tokens after the ICO.
There are investors that doesn't like those ICO's that does have a big allocation for bounties, airdrops and marketing.
Because after getting the rewards, most of those bounty hunters and airdrop claimers will just dump those coins.

The projects are fighting for our attention, time and money.
No users. No value.

Once they have our attention - what's next?
Sell us more of the same token that were just airdropped for free?
