The optimized cpuminer (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/an-even-more-optimized-version-of-cpuminer-poolers-cpuminer-cpu-only-55038) gave me the best speed on CPU, maybe you could try it.
LTC mining will have much lower hash rates than BTC mining, so don't expect to see anything in the MHash/sec unless you have some huge GPU farm dedicated to it! I get ~24KHash/s on my Intel Core i7 920
Dont use the client. Use CG Miner or similar. You will get much better performance.

I'm currently using the litecoin Client to mine using my CPU (Quad AMD Phenom II X4 830)
I have 100% CPU Utilization but I am only getting 18-22 KHash/s. Is this typical? or what do I need to do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.
