volume would be number of trades

Volume is not the number of trades but the number of "units" traded.   A single trade of 100 LTC would add 100 LTC to the daily volume.   Volume can only be compared in consistent terms.  Saying 20,000 LTC is higher volume than 5,000 BTC would be like saying a million pennies is more than a 1 ton of gold.

I've never seen LTC trade volume higher than BTC (in terms of BTC traded), unless of course you mean :

In 24 hours :

20 000 LTC volume / 3000 BTC volume
If this was the case then, you need to remember that one BTC is worth over 80 LTC

volume has nothing to do with price.

I have seen LTC volume higher (in terms of BTC) on BTC-E  than Bitstamp's BTC volume (or BTC-E's BTC volume)...

I think it has happened several times.

I noticed this on the ticker chart few days ago..
is this true?

also, as time goes by more merchants and people are accepting bitcoins.
if this is true, shouldn't the volume of BTC be increasing?
one day the volume of BTC is like 5000 and few days later it's like 15000 and next 3000.
I mean why does it not stableize or show a correlated increase?

Thanks in advnace.
