You got the serial number and maybe could the MAC address be found from serial number?
Then can some service locate that MAC address?
It may have 2 MAC one for LAN and one for wireless.

That ... is actually a really good idea.  If you can get the MAC interface address from Apple or somebody, that's built directly into the network hardware of the machine.  And on Macbooks, you can't change the network hardware out, because it's built straight onto the motherboard.  So if there's a macbook somewhere on the network that's using that MAC interface, then it's the one.

Problem with that is, if it's on the network, that means it's IN USE, presumably has been for three and a half years, and the odds are whatever was on its hard drive has been cleared out to make room for somebody's porno collection.

This is about a one-in-five for finding your macbook, which is better than I'd have ever guessed you could do.  But it's still less than one-in-a-thousand for getting your bitcoins back.

wow

It would be difficult to get back.

Do you know the public key?

Maybe the money has been spent.

idk anything besides the Macbooks information (serial number, box, receipt with date or purchase and a Police report when the Macbook was stolen in 2010)

Only realistic chance is if you backed up your wallet. I'm guessing your macbook changed several hands. Also, why is this in "Scam accusations"?

Whether you can recover them from your Macbook doesn't matter if you can't get your Macbook back.   Worry about that if you get it back, which is of course very unlikely, bordering on impossible.

If you backed the wallet.dat file up somewhere, then just go get it and enjoy your $ and don't worry about your Macbook.

Checked every cloudstorage I have, I found the right resources to work towards recovering the computer. Thanks for all the POSITIVE input! All the negativity can keep on trolling !

You actually got the very best advice possible if your situation is genuine. It's more telling about your own character that you can't even be grateful for that.

You only got a healthy dose of mistrust and mockery because your tale is both suspicious and silly.

Still, if it helps you live with yourself to blame it on the mean bitcointalk people…

What the hell is so silly about trading WOW Gold for Bitcoins back when they were worthless and having a Macbook stolen that I find out has a wallet on it. People are retarded, Doesnt matter, if I recover the funds I will personally pick out each individual that contributed without being a fail troll and donate to them =) I might do that regardless just to show people how they SHOULD act.

LOL that you are pretty much buds with the guy who admits to stealing your laptop. You must be the biggest bitch in the world for someone to tell you to your face they stole your shit.

Obv this is 100% fake though.

And his room-mate - who must have been around years ago to be aware that the laptop had a wallet on it which contained 1200 BTC - hasn't mentioned it at all in the past few years as the price of BTC has risen despite the fact that the room-mate presumably wasn't in a Xanax-induced haze following a car accident.

Of course it would make a little bit more sense (although not much more) if the room-mate did, indeed, pay for the BTC and is now resentful that he's missing out on a potentially big pay day (his own fault for not having control of the wallet himself, if that's the case).

As many have stated, the hard truth is that the chances are extremely slim.  It sounds like the possibility of cloud storage is off the table, so the only two chances are:

1) Thief goes to Apple store for repair and it's flagged stolen
2) You physically track the individual

You had also asked if recovery is possible in the event that you recover the laptop and the drive was wiped.  While theoretically possible, realistically it's unlikely.  If the computer has never touched the hands of someone technologically capable, then perhaps it was never wiped, but obviously just finding the computer is your first hurdle.

There's a user new user called CyberDonate who is probably the same person (Trance's profile and CyberDonate's posts both reference Sean's Outpost).

There's a CyberDonate blog (goes back to 2010) and also a CyberDonate Twitter

This is some bullshit scam attempt to acquire coins that belong to somebody else. Trance, where's your 2010 account? Lemme guess, you lost the password?

Of course it is.  Must be all that Xanax which makes the OP think his story is plausible.

It's far more likely that he's become aware that someone else had 1200 BTC on a Macbook they lost/sold/had stolen in 2010 and wants to try to recover the Macbook because he realises what they're potentially worth and the person who owned the Macbook doesn't (after all, they weren't worth much in 2010 and lots of people abandoned BTC altogether back then - people even lost interest and deleted their wallets).

I believe you... try tracking down the guy who stole the MacBook. Then ask him more info about the dealer.

If you think that a drug dealer who accepted a Macbook in exchange for drugs over 3 years ago would still have it you're as deluded as the OP.  Drug dealers accept so many electronic goods as payment that he's not even going to remember who he sold/gave that particular Macbook to even if OP can locate him.

The police aren't going to care about a 3 year old theft either.  Any story the OP tells them about why he's suddenly interested in trying to recover property he did nothing about recovering at the time it was "stolen" is going to sound suspicious, not that the police have the resources to investigate every minor property theft anyway, even if it's reported immediately (normally the main reason for even reporting it is so you can claim it on insurance).

Apple's not going to get involved.  If you didn't report the Macbook as stolen in 2010 then you have no way to prove that you didn't sell it yourself.

I agree with other posters.  OP sounds a lot more like someone who's looking for advice about how to get his hands on something belonging to someone else than someone trying to recover his own property.  Xanax doesn't make you lose your memory for 3 fucking years.

If it were me, I would spend the rest of my life tracking down this black drug dealer dude. He's probably sold it to someone else along the way, but you know, money talks. Grease the palms of a few people and maybe you'll get the info you'll need. And don't tell them it's for the bitcoins, give them a sob story about the car accident and priceless family photos, etc.

Once you have it back, try a recovery service, and if you're lucky, it might just work.

No. Not if it's been overwritten. Even if the file has been deleted, subsequent use will overwrite those free blocks with new files. In a timespan of more than three years the chance seems tiny, and that is assuming you ever locate the laptop again, which seems frankly ridiculous.

Your best bet is the cloud storage.

not sure wtf one may think I'm up to here...

If you had Mobile Me and Back To Mac (pre iCloud which started in Oct 2011) turned on and know the appleid then there could be a slight chance it is still connected. Very slight, but it is worth a try.  Likewise, if you had any type of time machine backup set and the wallet.dat file was backed-up, look there.

Your best bet is to figure out what cloud storage service you used, the password etc. and check there.  Likewise, if you have a time capsule or other time machine backup, check those.  Also, if you did have any of the old MobileMe features on, see if they are still active.

If none of those, you'll have to find the machine and hope that it hasn't been formatted IF you can even find it.

I don't think you are getting that Macbook back if you ask me. Truth is even if you got it back that data is most likely long gone, I know I would wipe a laptop if I bought it from anyone. Then again that is me. Those coins are most likely lost and you will never see them again. Sorry for telling you this. You can try to track it, find who they have sold it to and go from there, but I doubt it will get you far and you will just spend money and time chasing something that is gone. If you do go to police tell them the truth, no need to lie there.

Yeah I'm trolling ... that would not even be fun and it would make me look VERY stupid, regardless, I feel stupid and look even stupider. At least one person gave me a website that I can start with in regards to recovery, I was hoping someone can use my Macbooks serial number and info in the box that the purchase came with to track the location of the Macbook. Only a few private messages and each is asking the names of the cloud storage, I'll just delete the post after a day to see if anyone has had a similar situation, I would sleep better knowing the Macbook was either destroyed or that someone made use of the coins.. otherwise this just sucks and I feel utterly retarded but its not my fault I was hit by a car and went MIA for awhile :\ xanax really messes up ones memory!

"African American" is the currently accepted term for an American of African ancestry.

It replaces "Negro" and "Black" and several other terms which were, evidently, used in a racist way often enough for the people to start to feel that those terms were in themselves insulting.

I suppose, for some reason I'm unaware of, that the same fate might not befall "African American."  I sincerely hope that it doesn't anyway; I'm tired of retconning language every few years just because assholes keep right on being assholes when they adopt a new term along with the rest of the world.  But I've never yet seen a new term that can convince assholes to stop being assholes and loading whatever term they use with their own asshole sentiments, so I'm dubious about the process.

If the the files were just deleted and nothing new was written, then maybe. But given that this was more than 3 years ago, it's going to have been overwritten.

If it's been overwritten then no. No data recovery lab will agree to take the job on a "no find no fee" basis because there isn't going to be any of the original data left after it's been overwritten even once.

Your story also seems highly implausible but that doesn't really matter.

So I guess this makes BTC bullish?

Lots BTC = Donation to everyone else holding BTC.

Just like that guy who lost 7000 BTC in a computer sent to a landfill.

It really doesn't matter I just want to get my Macbook back because of a photo file of my grandmother LETS JUST SAY THATS what im trying to recover instead to stop the speculations

But we all know that's not true.

Not a speculation if you claim something to be true.

If he was using the standard client there was no encrypted wallet.dat back in 2010, trust me on this one.

Good point. OP are you able to access the cloud storage where you say you stored the file?

So, why did you wait four years to make this thread?

What type of services??

How much and where do i start??

(TIPPING BTC FOR GOOD ADVICE-- Post address below!)

You need the wallet.dat file. The recovery services are to unencrypt the file. See here:

Do you know the public key?

Maybe the money has been spent.

... I also think i have the information to a cloud storage that I stored that file in as well!

Don't say the name of the cloud storage here, but you don't need the laptop if the wallet.dat file is stored in the cloud.

All you need is access to the wallet.dat file, and the passphrase to unencrypt it if it's encrypted. There are Bitcoin recovery services that may be able to help you unencrypt a file where you're unsure of the passphrase but have an idea what it is. Again, you don't need the laptop. You only need the wallet.dat file.

this person doesnt even know wtf the macbook has on it! besides my school work and garbage photos!

hes a black dude that sells drugs!.. the people that stole it from me told me hes black and in the Southside of St.pete and that hes known for taking stolen electronics as collateral for drugs and even as payment!

Im going to hang myself if I cant figure this out!

I've read stories about hackers finding their mac's before hacking into their computers and keylogging them and finding the person via usernames and passwords to gmail accounts and so forth (IP addresses etc)

I actually have a listing on Craigslist with my Macs information with a $500 reward for anyone who claims it (before I found out a year later who actually stole it, i thought I just left it and had it randomly stolen, now that I know who actually stole it, makes things a bit easier, narrows down the location to St.Petersburg Florida, where I live, will the FBI help me at all? since it's such a large sum of money, should I not mention the money aspect of it all???)

two things are possible.

1.  You have a backup of your wallet.dat

2.  You have lost your bitcoins.

There is no third thing that is possible.

I got my Macbook stolen by two acquaintances in late 2010 in Tampa Florida, I was living in Gainesville at the time for my first year of school.

I know who stole it and he told me they traded the macbook for drugs to some african American in the Southside of St.Petersburg, Florida (where i currently reside)

I have 1200 BTC stored on the computer, I have the purchase receipt, police report, ALL serial numbers and even the box that the Macbook came in!

SOMEONE PLEASE tell me what steps I should take in regards to recovering my Macbook, this is now worth $894,000 ***

I'm willing to split this with anyone who is willing to work with me!

I do not want to give out ALL the computers information incase someone finds the computer before me and pays the person $$$ to get it back

ALSO if he wiped the drive, are ALL the BTCitcoins GONE?Huh

I have no other information besides its stored on paper file on the computer! I also think i have the information to a cloud storage that I stored that file in as well!

I'm going nuts....someone help!

PST for my phone number or email if you are serious about helping me recover, I'm going to the Police again Monday, but should i use a cover up story instead of saying its for Bitcoins???

Sad

God help me!

**IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM AM I ASKING FOR MONEY IN ORDER TO RETRIEVE MY DATA~ for all those attempting to hurt my rep to scare people away from thinking the computer is not mine, which i have receipt purchase proof and box etc, I'm simply trying to get in touch wit the proper resources to RECOVER MY Macbook or just the data (most significant)
